Copenhagen, Denmark – February 2026 – Denmark’s national domain registry, Punktum dk, is phasing out direct registrant management, requiring all .dk domain holders to select an accredited registrar by June 30, 2028. The policy change ends a decades-old system where Danish businesses and individuals could manage their .dk domains directly with the registry.
Two key deadlines govern the transition. From July 1, 2026, all new .dk domain registrations must be processed through a registrar. For existing domains held directly at Punktum dk, the deadline to complete the switch is June 30, 2028. Punktum dk has begun notifying affected registrants directly.
The .dk namespace is one of the most widely adopted country-code top-level domains in Europe relative to population size. The change affects domain holders across all sectors – businesses, public institutions, associations, and private individuals – who currently manage their domains directly through the registry rather than through a registrar.
“The split system, where registrants held domains at the registry while using a separate provider for DNS, email, and hosting, frequently caused confusion and unintended service disruptions,” says Netsite A/S ( https://www.netsite.dk/ ), a Copenhagen-based domain registrar and hosting company that has operated in the Danish market since 1998. “Consolidating everything under one registrar eliminates that friction. Domain holders get a single point of contact for billing, support, and administration.”
The transition is purely administrative. Existing DNS settings, websites, email services, and other technical configurations remain unaffected. Registrants using external DNS providers such as Cloudflare, Azure DNS, or AWS Route 53 will see no changes to their setup. Prepaid registration periods at Punktum dk also transfer to the chosen registrar.
While Punktum dk has not specified the exact consequences for domains that remain without a registrar past the deadline, industry observers note the risk of temporary suspension. Domain holders are advised to act well before the cutoff.
For registrants evaluating their options, important considerations include transparent renewal pricing, availability of local-language support, and whether additional services such as hosting are required. Domain-only registrar services are available for those who only need administrative handling without bundled products.
Netsite A/S, which manages tens of thousands of domains and offers .dk registration from 90 DKK (approx. EUR 12) per year with identical pricing on renewal, provides a detailed guide for domain holders navigating the transition at https://www.netsite.dk/domaene/
