Of course they are. So is bunnings, Woolies and all of the rest of them. Facial recognition with plans to utilise the data to take advantage of you and charge you more.

No they just want to put a red box around you

Yes. They partnered with Palantir back in 2024.

Yes – and not only that they just signed a massive deal with Palantir.
So now your shopping preferences are probably also logged in your permanent file, owned by a military organization!

Yes lol, these systems have been in development for ages. I was working at the company that developed the Aldi version (used mostly in the US) when they were putting it together, has some pretty in-depth tracking while you’re in the store.

Not Coles specifically but Israeli corporation Palantir

Boxing movement isn’t ai (although marketing may put that sticker on it) – face identification or cataloging images based on terms using AI large language models is what needs your permission (notification at the door on entry) and the storage of that is what needs better governance.
Although if AI watches cameras within a stores private property that identifies offenders and thieves and groups video from multiple feeds and dates into valid evidence that can be used to discourage that behaviour then I’ll probably still shop there.

The system displayed is totally unrelated to all the plantair stuff they have..
it’s just your standard cctv system that every store basically has just with more cameras
MasterLiam82 on
Yes. They announced it recently.
Bunnings won their court case, allowing them to film and use ai and facial recognition, so other stores are now doing it.

Yes but it’s easy to steal still so dont sweat it

“You are being watched. The government has a secret system, a machine that spies on you every hour of every day.“ I mean, it’s the opening narration from Person of Interest, but yes.

Isn’t that the entire fucking point?
Fire all the check out workers. Make you scan your own groceries. Give millions of dollars per year to the tech libertarian billionaires in the USA to make sure you don’t steal shit at the self checkout.
I’m not usually a dystopian doomer, but this whole thing is pretty bloody dystopian and unnecessary.

So yes they are, but what this TV is displaying is unrelated. A bunch of retail stores including the one I work at use it and it’s just a scare tactic. It’s similar to the blob tracker effect in touch designer and it’s just a visual effect.

There is a camera on the top of the self checkout counter which uses AI to determine if you haven’t scanned an item while dropping it in you bag..

Do people realise that Coles has voluntarily partnered with Palantir to overhaul its systems, which obviously includes surveillance. If you go into Coles, rest assured you are in Palantir’s database now.
plenty of survalence systems with integrated ai have this sort of person tracker these days. it can make it easier to follow a specific person if they do end up stealing and you need to go through the videos, as it keeps track of which camera youre present in throughout your movement through the store. its also used to keep track of how many people are in the store at any given time, and some stores use this sort of person tracking to measure metrics like conversion (ratio of customers who enter the store vs customers who buy something).
many stores use thus sort of system, its not really new. and I dont really think its malicious, its just you usually dont see it like that because most stores other than Coles dont have visible camera footage like that
