NHK has learned that Japan will join a NATO-led initiative to provide US-made munitions and equipment to Ukraine.

NATO and the United States established the mechanism in July 2025 to coordinate the purchase and delivery of US-manufactured munitions and equipment to Ukraine.

Over 20 NATO member states, including Germany and the Netherlands, have said they will contribute to the initiative, while Australia and New Zealand have also pledged to participate.

The alliance has already supplied missiles for Ukraine’s Patriot air-defense systems and other items through the framework.

Multiple NATO officials told NHK that Japan is expected to formally announce its plan to contribute to the initiative soon.

The officials said Japan will provide funding only for non-lethal defense equipment, possibly including radar systems and bulletproof vests.

They said Japan has briefed multiple NATO members and Ukraine on the plan.

One NATO official said even non-lethal equipment is essential for Ukraine, adding that Japan’s involvement in the initiative is a significant development.

February 24 will mark four years since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, and signs of fatigue can be seen among some Western countries in supporting Ukraine as the conflict continues.
