This should go to an EU referendum in each country. This is way to complicated to expedited without the will of the people.

Personally I also disagree with this. Start an economical cooperation first but no EU entrance. Next step, if all has been cleaned from corruption and implementation of EU rules , they can join without voting rights. After 5 or so years they can get voting rights. I don’t think we want another Hungary in the EU.

Hungary is a failed state as long as Orban is in office.

A stopped clock is right twice a day, and on this occasion… The EU runs the risk of creating *another* Hungary if it fast-tracks Ukraine into the EU; it’s decades away from meeting EU accession standards on corruption, treatment of minorities, human rights, and does not exactly have a stellar track record on democracy either; there’s no guarantee that the EU will be as enamoured of whoever is in charge in 5 or 10 years time as they are right now, and if the fundamental constitutional and civil structures are not in place we will just have an even less constrained Orban on our hands.
The only way fast-tracking Ukraine makes sense is if it comes together with the elimination of national vetoes, and with a mechanism in place to kick states out as well as letting them in.
Which is something Orban really should be scared of…

This place is full of teenagers. I bet they first heard a country named Ukraine exists when the war started 4 years ago.
They have no idea how corrupted it is.

Well, that will be a great message to all the other candidates…
EDIT: Thanks for the responses, yeah, if this is a reform of the application process for everyone, then it makes sense.

Ukraine has been in the midst of corruption scandals during the whole war. Heck, it was the second most corrupt country in Europe only behind Russia before.
I’m totally pro Ukraine and want that we take more direct steps in their support. But letting them join the EU without fixing the problems thoroughly would be unfair to the countries that are in process of joining. Also it would be shortsighted to let such things pass.

Why would Ukraine join the EU? Maybe I don’t have the whole picture but in the news it’s made to look like “join the EU to feel more safer”. If this is the motivation it’s obviously a ticking time bomb.
Maybe some other insights?

This is so dumb, Ukraine is not even close to be ready. I hope reason will win.

I don’t think this is a good idea. EU membership should be strictly conditional

How predictable that Hungary is being brought into the debate in order to hide the fact that Ukraine meets hardly any of the criteria for EU accession. But if Hungary is against it…

What’s all the fuss about? If membership (according to the article) is limited and purely nominal, how will that help Ukraine or the EU? Especially during a war. Achievement?

I’m certain that the only reason Hungary is not under pressure to be booted out is because of the fear it would immediately become Southern Belarus outside the EU

What would happen if Ukraine get annexed to Russia? Would we have EU Russia?

I don’t care about Hungary and Orban’s traitorous objections.
But Poland cannot possibly allow Ukraine membership until they’ve reconciled with their history on the UPA and Banderites, and allow full cooperation of exhuming victims of the Galician and Volhynian genocide.
Which I’m sure would be happening if not for the war, but still needs to happen. Like jeeze, North Macedonia was blocked from entry for far more petty reasons by Greece/Bulgaria.

Trust me, theres probably nobody that hates Orban more than I do, and I fully support helping Ukraine militarily (and humanitarily), and rebuild after the war, and then to develop to a point where they can apply and join, but rushing it like this is an absolutely insane idea. Pre-war ukraine was incomparably more corrupt than Hungary (which is currently the hated country in the EU), and the massive destruction and misery they are being caused wont cause improvement on that in the short term…

Ukraine is not ready, but actual willingness is 60% of the battle (10% will be compensating poland for the agricultural damages, and the other 20% anti corruption measures). The EU would be monumentally stupid not to accelerate ascension, so long as ukraine looks willing to up their standards. Better a willing work in progress than an unwilling “finished” job.
