Hungarian man, 30, was caught using a stone to carve numbers into the temples

A tourist has been arrested after he was caught carving numbers on a stone at the ancient Ġgantija temples.

The 30-year-old man from Hungary was arrested after someone at the temple spotted him vandalising part of the temples with a stone, police told Times of Malta.

The damage was not extensive, the police said. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

This is not the first time someone has been caught vandalising the temples.

In 2023, an Italian student was fined €15,000 for vandalising Ġgantija temples. He admitted to the charges brought against him and was sentenced to two years imprisonment suspended for four years – the maximum period permitted by law.

The Ġgantija Temples are a UNESCO World Heritage site on Gozo, which were built between 3600 and 3200 BC.
