Bulgaria Appoints Andrey Gyurov as Interim Prime Minister for Early Elections

As Reuters reports

The President of Bulgaria, Iliyana Yotova, appointed Andriy Gyurov, deputy governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, as temporary prime minister to lay the groundwork for early parliamentary elections.

The decision was made on February 11, 2026.

The previous government resigned on December 11 after several weeks of protests against its economic policy and corruption allegations. After that, President Rumen Radev also resigned, handing over largely ceremonial powers to Vice President Iliyana Yotova, who became the first woman in Bulgaria’s history to head the state. It is expected that Radev will establish a new political force.

The date of the snap elections, which, according to early statements, will be the eighth in five years in Bulgaria, has not yet been set.

Context of the Events and Prospects

In a statement from the President’s Office, it says that Andriy Gyurov will lead the temporary government, tasked with preparing the conditions for holding early parliamentary elections.

Earlier, Yotova had suggested that the vote could take place in mid- or late-April.

Bulgaria, which joined the eurozone on January 1, is currently in a period of prolonged political instability: political forces are unable to form stable coalitions in a fractured parliament.

The interim government aims to stabilize the political situation and ensure preparations for the elections.
