Yikes. I have a lot of issues with this protest, I think they have serious hate problems, but the clamping down on freedom of speech is a vastly bigger issue. The right to protest should be protected. This is democracy, clamping down on legitimate protesters isn’t it.

Freedom of speech itself is a vastly more important issue than what’s being protested. So in this case I find myself hard in support of the protesters, even while disagreeing with a lot of their messaging.

  2. To beat the shit out of people prostrating an alleged war criminal?

    Fuckin embarrassing vic government.

Hey, it keeps working so well whenever we grant ourselves special powers, let’s run it back!

  4. Don’t bring that shit to our turf pls.

Can he just…I dunno, fuck off? He has already visited Sydney and that’s “the only city” in Australia so he can go home now. Please.

His visit is just gonna make the racial tension higher and whatever shit that will happen (i.e. police beating folks up) when he actually comes will mount to the tension too. His visit does nothing else other than stirring up more shit.

  5. According to lawyer Kon Karapanagiotidis the special powers do not apply to/restrict marching along the planned protest route. He has made a few videos explaining the legalities of this order on his instagram, I don’t know if reddit allows instagram links but his username is just his full name.
According to him, the police can not legally direct you to leave the Melbourne CBD for protesting, or carry out searches without warrants, unless you’re actively carrying out a crime (eg carrying outlawed hate symbol like ISIS flags) including actively impeding their operations.

Edit – According to Kon the main issue is if Herzog decides to attend an event very close to the protest route tonight, then the police can attack and detain protestors who try to assemble there under terrorism charges.
Which IMHO is absolute bullshit in terms of civil liberties.

Naturally we don’t know yet where exactly he will be visiting, but that seems to be the excuse NSW police gave for attacking the NSW protestors – because after visiting Bondi beach to lay stones at the memorial to the victims, Herzog attended another event at Darling Harbour Exhibition Building, uncomfortably close to where the protestors were (a few streets over to the West).
It didn’t matter that the route they wanted to march (to NSW parliamant) was North-East, in the opposite direction. That proximity was the reason Minns gave to excuse the police rushing, beating, pepper spraying civilians peacefully protesting.

    >The areas where the powers will apply will not be revealed in order to protect the president.

This is the craziest part for me. If you get stopped by the cops in Melbourne today you have no way of knowing what your rights are. The place you’re standing might be somewhere the cops have extraordinary powers, it it might not. You don’t know. You just have to take the cops’ word for it what powers they do and don’t have. That is fucking insane.

  7. God I really hope it doesn’t get ugly like it did in Sydney. But considering Melbourne is the protest capital of Australia… I dread just thinking about the videos I’ll see tonight.

so more people lose their human rights because this legitimate genocidaire wants to dodge the ICC charges.

  9. Oh is this South Melbourne where they’ve cordoned off the area around City Road? The businesses there are thrilled to have their trading cut in half.

You do not, under any circumstances, gotta hand it to vicpol, but I thought their presence on Monday was notably restrained. Hoping for a repeat this afternoon.

Wtf is the point of him coming to Melbourne? It seems beyond the scope of the alleged reasons for his visit. Pay your respects at Bondi and fuck off. It’s become a PR tour for his rhetoric

  12. Basically our citizens are going to be searched because some dude who has allowed genocide to occur is even allowed to come here. Disgraceful.
Are we in US yet? Because this feels a little too much like it.

  13. Are there any other international leaders that would require such significant actions from Australian government/authority?

  14. I’m truely shock he’s coming to Melbourne given the regularity of protests in the city regarding the war in Gaza.

That the government need extra powers to repress Australian outrage is an obvious sign the government knows its made a horrible decision and is captured by a foreign government.

This is terrifying. I hope everybody attending the protest looks out for eachother, and with the aggression shown by police please don’t bring young children to the protests. (Fully support the protests)

Anyone actually got a source from Supreme Court with details of the ruling. I’m aware of ASRC’s Instagram post, but an official source would be appreciated. Struggling to find anything :/

There is a neo-nazi and white supremacist called Kevin Alfred Strom who wrote in 1993: “To determine the true rulers of any society, all you must do is ask yourself this question: Who is it that I am not permitted to criticize?”

This guy is an unmitigated piece of shit but holy fuck the accuracy of this quote and the actions of our state and Federal Government is incredible.

Planned protest areas, banned zones… just fuck off completely.
