  1. Yeah council needs to stop fooling itself that these bike racks are fine and useable. if they really want to encourage riding, they need an easy, secure, affordable option.

  2. That actually happened to my son when he was 11 or so. After multiple stolen BMXs my brother firmly fixed a pipe clamp to the bricks so the kids could lock their bikes up.

One morning Mr 11 came in and said ‘my bike’s f*cked’ (not great language from an 11 year old…but not inaccurate as it turned out).

They’d stolen the seat, wheels, pegs, pedals…basically anything that could be removed.

That was the last BMX…mountain bikes only from that point…they were not cool enough to steal.

  3. Would the parts removed actually be worth anything? Or is this just a case of stealing stuff because they can?

It used to be common to see a chain attached to a front wheel and another chain attached to a frame missing it’s front wheel.

I am curious to know if we see someone stealing, are we suppose to step in? Considering police would be too late to arrive. Night, i understand, but its happening in daylight

  6. Interesting! I saw someone taking a bike plus 2 tires a seat onto the Valley Train Station platform yesterday arvo. I wonder if he nabbbed someones kit.

  7. My friend told me a story about his bike stolen from south bank, he had a hidden tracker on it. He had only left his bike out for 30 minutes and by the time he came back it was gone and the tracker was in (the homeless camp under a bridge??) anyway, he gets to the bridge and sure enough his bike is there but it’s been stripped of parts and the tracker. (in 30 minutes or so). He’s did get his bike back but not the stripped parts. Personally no way in hell I’d confront these desperate people who are obviously making money through bike parts.

  8. The next day at 99 Bikes:
“… Sir, I don’t know how else to explain this. Your service plan only covers parts that are still attached to the bike.”
