    [GeorgiaToday:](https://georgiatoday.ge/georgia-to-ban-import-of-cars-older-than-six-years/)

    > The Georgian government has submitted a draft law to parliament proposing a ban on the import of vehicles older than six years, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced at today’s government session.
    >
    > Kobakhidze claimed that the number of registered vehicles in Georgia has more than doubled over the past decade, rising from 864,000 in 2012 to over two million this year. He said the sharp increase has contributed to growing traffic congestion and a deteriorating environmental situation.
    >
    > The Prime Minister stressed that the proposed legislation is intended to address environmental and public health concerns, while also improving road safety and ensuring more comfortable mobility for citizens. Although the draft law includes several limited exceptions, Kobakhidze underscored that its primary goal is to prevent the import of vehicles older than six years.

  2. Is that so bad? Not Georgian but relatives are, you have shitload of wrecks on your roads that here in eastern EU would be banned by cops in five minutes. And cops don’t like to work here either

  3. Newer car = higher cost to repair and higher cost of acquisition

This will directly impact the low and middle class, potentially worsening the credit crisis on these individuals while limiting transportation options for work.

This is one of those “good intentions” with potentially negative unintended consequences.

  4. Will that include the vast transit flow of exports to the North, or just cars cleared into Georgia

Reexport of used vehicles is one of the top 5 industries in the country. Even if you don’t consider the impact on Georgian drivers, this is going to eviscerate a lot of people in that business.

  6. Anything that cleans the air up a little bit is welcome. Now if they would invest in public transport and make driving more expensive (or rather parking more expensive) that would be amazing

  7. Nice, guess rich really got tired of traffic jams and parking spot issues, let peasants ride overcrowded buses so GD elites can drive on empty roads.

Will take about 10 years to actually rich that point but they are not going anywhere so better start soon.

  8. Not a single soul seems to understand that this law will benefit only russia, as brand new Ladas will swarm this country once again. New in name but shit in quality.

  9. Better liability on ownership would be a better idea IMO but am I an expert, no.

But without being an expert, it is clear as day this is not a positive move. Enables upper class again. Doing everything to keep the gap as it is if not making it worse. I would say it’s done with the purpose very small number of people would understand even if I tried to explain in Georgia.

Why do I even bother writing this comment?! I’d rather masturbate

This is a shitty idea, and anyone who claims otherwise is either delusional or does not comprehend the real picture behind it.
This will not limit the number of cars registered in the country; it will actually have zero effect on that. GD wants to replace the European car market with the Chinese one for obvious reasons. China is currently dominating the global EV market, and their cars are cheap, so why not? This works perfectly fine for them since they’re trying to put the country into the Chinese orbit.

I suppose this is in response to the abominable emissions, but this can’t possibly be the best solution
