How Europans Pronounce Mexico

  1. As far as I understand, the older, arguably more correct pronunciation is “Meshico” (like the people the Mexicas (Pronounced “Meshicas”).

    You have to consider the spelling with X might have come from Catalan or Valenciano (not Castillian), where the X is often used for “sh” sounds.

    So the Italians are just Old-School, but maybe closer to historically correct.

  2. Is it also pronounced with a “sh” in Luxembourg or does it have no data? I’m not sure if it and Portugal have the same shade of grey. Also I believe Luxembourgish has a “ks” sound there, ar leadt according to wiki

  3. Spanish from Spain (Castellano) writes it México, but pronounces Méjico ( like if it was an H). other spanish languages might vary.
    Same with Texas / Tejas. We even call denim pants Tejanos.

  4. Btw, in Russian we have: country with ks/кс (Мексика), and city with h/х (Мехико). As you can see, the ending is also different ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    Austrian – I pronounce it Meksiko, the ks kinda sound like an x but the k is more pronounced
