My friends brought this over from Norway at Christmas. It tastes beautiful with a taste of Christmas, but Jesus Christ, this stuff is lethal. I had three small glasses and beer, went to bed drunk and woke up the following morning unable to walk in a straight line.
My question’s are…What spirit is it based on and do you have it with mixers (I drank it without)?
I’ve been promised more when they come over in the summertime 🙂

No mixers. Make sure to eat some fatty food with it. Enjoy👍
It’s the water of life. Aqua Vitae.
Akevitt, the national strong spirits drink. It was the first strong spirit on the South Pole.
Based of potatoes. You see that bottle in a lot of norwegian homes during christmas.
Edit; Don’t mix it. I repeat, don’t f***ing mix it.
Youre supposed to have a shot or two of them with (Christmas)dinner
Its mostly drunk straight, with greasy food.
But you can make my favorite drink with it, Fjellbekk (mountain stream). Equal parts akevitt and vodka, Sprite to taste, ice and a slice of lime. Enjoy!
It works well with salty fatty meaty foods 🙂
When you say “small glass”, are we talking shots? I assume this aquawit is ~40% alcohol?
I’ve also tasted it as a cocktail mixed with apple soda, that was interesting in a good way.
It’s potato liquor best enjoyed with salty or fatty food (ribbe or pinnekjøtt), preferably with a nice cold beer at the side.
By your story it sounds like you did a “[Homer](https://youtu.be/m9v4_Xsja-w?si=DtJeajYEurIRBgBu)”
It’s Christmas aquavit or snaps.
The Norwegian aqua vit is made from potatoes. It is spiced with caraway or dill, but may also have other spices.
It is usually drunk straight but there are drinks such as Fjellbekk.
It’s a gift from the gods. Have an low alcohol beer next to it, just a regular lager. Enjoy
Something that gets you seriously drunk. 👌🏻
As a young guy, this was seduction in a bottle. Just don’t drink it with questionable seafood! lofl
I was told to savour it like a single malt so definitely not shotted.
Medicine
Flybensin.
I feel your pain.
As a whisky drinker I thought Aye, no problem as I got stuck into it. Next morning felt as though I might have been stuffed in a barrel and transported around the world through particularly lively seas (I know that’s a slightly different aquavit but still…).
Heartily endorse having it with fatty food and/or with a cold beer to moderate the after effects.
It’s pure culture
Potato spirit.
You can mix it with tonic like a gin tonic, or make a Fjellbekk (mountain brook):
In a glass, mix 2 cl akevitt, 2 cl vodka, 1 cl Curaçao, and the juice of half a lime. Top up with lemon soda.
But most just drink it as is. I have some on a flask for when I’m out hiking. Tastes best at the top of a mountain or when you finally get to your destination.
The dill and caraway it’s flavored with makes it a great pairing with fatty and salty foods. Since it’s not Christmas, you could see about having it with some cured sausage.
Dont tempt me
I was introduced to the wonder of tur aquavit while doing my first multi day hike in Norway. Two hut-mates who learned I was ‘from away’ offered to introduce me to this part of their culture. One of the highlights of my trip, for sure!
Aquavit is drunk neat 99% of the time but I can recommend a cocktail called the Oslo Mule. It consists of aquavit, ginger beer (can be alcholic or non-alcoholic), and lime. Give it a serious splash of (Norwegian) apple juice or apple cider for a more nordic flavour.
Or you could try the Nordic Negroni. 2 parts aquavit, 2 parts campari, 2 parts vermouth.
Healty drink. Makes you happy
My favourites is that exact bottle and a brand called Gammel Opland. For me a good akevitt can match a good scotch whiskey.
