I thinks various UK politicians have been pragmatic and realistic enough to realize this, but the political climate in the UK electorate have clung to the idea of the “special relationship” that came out of the second world war. A sentiment that was amplified by the loss of the Empire, both literally and psychologically.

Weird how the US, specifically Obama, told the UK voters to their faces that this was going to be the case before they voted for brexit. That Britain would be better off in the EU. He was lambasted for daring to meddle in European politics. 10 years later the Brit’s are just figuring out your friend(US) was telling you the truth, and trying to save you from a mess of a decision.

I’m pretty sure the UK will rejoin after a decade or two but hopefully without needing to first pass through a horrible period with a reform UK government

I love that they’re discussing it openly now – we are stronger together. We share a border via the tunnel and centuries of history but makes me nervous to welcome them back in and then the electorate votes in Farage/ pro US govt and we go through it all again.

His predecessors knew it too, it’s just their greed/pride took priority over the country as a whole.

His predecessors also knew this, but they figured out they could capitalize grievances against the EU to further their own political careers without any care whatsoever for the enormous price Britain would have to pay.
However, if the polls are to be believed, it seems the british people will have to plunge further into the depths of far-right populism until they realize they are being conned.

We’re better off with both. So when one goes to shit we can just chill with the other until things settle down.
Rinse and repeat, the US is the bad guy now, but come 2030, we could be looking at an EU headed up by AfD and RN.

Absolutely delusional to think the British public will accept the euro and Schengen whilst reform leads in the polls.
The EU should rightfully hold off any further progress until the election happens or it’s a total waste of time if PM Farage becomes a reality.

Let’s not forget, Farage and his “Reform” party are popular in Britain.

The only reason Starmer is running to Europe is because Trump is deranged and unreliable. In three years time he’s out of office and a much more sane Vance or Newsom will be in office.
Anyway, have people seen the polls? The next government will be a Tory/Reform coalition. This shows that even after all these years the British electorate is still deeply suspicious of the EU (and rightly so)

Just don’t come here and peddle your shitty ass restrictions and censorship, we already got enough of problems with that without the UK.

There have, at most, been two pro brexit prime ministers, and calling may pro brexit was a stretch.

He might have grasped it himself but the problem is that voters over there are too stupid to do the same. Labour are polling at record lows pretty much, while Reform is topping the polls and the Tories, which are just a little bit less anti-EU than Reform, are second. And they both said they would scrap new deals signed with the EU if not even previous ones, see what Farage threatened to do with the Withdrawal Agreement recently.
Whatever new deal we sign with the UK needs to include very high costs or harsh financial penalties for disavowing them, with money placed in escrow, in case they elect some of these retards. Thankfully the Commission is going in that direction with stuff like SAFE or the SPS agreement

Boris Johnson literally decided to become pro Brexit in order to remain in power and back the winning horse. He continued it because he wanted to be Prime minster. He lived in Brussels and was pro Europe while mayor of London.
There’s probably never been a politician more without principle or scruple in politics than him in a long time. A truly catastrophic PM. Who lied to the voters, his cabinet and about everyone else. He is the reason for the current destruction of the Conservative Party and potentially Farage as the next PM of the UK.
Rishi Sunak and Theresa May were also deep down Remainers. The only ardent leavers were those who were never even in power, like Farage

But the EU is not better off with the UK. We have decoupled from them, because they see themselves as akin to the other English speaking countries, including the US, and too different from us Europeans.
Starmer’s interest in a rapprochement is totally transactional, fleeting and a result of the realization that the big, wide world of opportunities they envisioned for themselves, all those talks of buccaneering Britain, Singapore-upon-Thames, etc have failed to materialise. The country equivalent of a man who dumps his wife because he’s certain single women will jump to his bones and he ends up alone.
The EU should show some self respect and not feed into the UK’s delusion that things can go back to the way they were. They never are.

Shame that he is historically unpopular, and the right wing media in the UK is doing everything they can to put Farage in power.
