Romanian President Nicușor Dan intends to participate next week as an observer in the first meeting of US President Donald Trump’s so-called Board of Peace, he announced on Facebook on Sunday after days of internal consultations.
He said he was accepting an invitation from Trump.
His aim is to reaffirm Romania’s support for international peace efforts and its willingness to participate in the reconstruction process in the Gaza Strip, Dan wrote further.
He referred to a resolution initiated by the United States and adopted by the UN Security Council in November.
Romania is not a member of Trump’s Board of Peace. Dan explained that the country received an invitation a week ago, but he said he wants to clarify with the US before making a decision on how the charter of the Board of Peace could be changed to align with Romania’s other international commitments, Dan explained.
Trump’s brainchild, the Board of Peace was officially launched by the US president last month at the World Economic Forum in Davos. From the European Union, only Bulgaria and Hungary are members.
Many European countries – including Germany – see the Board of Peace as a competitor to the United Nations and have therefore stayed away from its founding.
Italy also has observer status
According to US media reports, the controversial body is set to meet for the first time on Thursday in Washington.
Italy also intends to participate as an observer in the Board of Peace in the future. On what personnel level the country would be represented still needs to be decided, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recently announced.
