After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine triggered an about-face on NATO membership, Sweden is starting to consider another historic shift: adopting the euro.

While the debate is in its early stages, a subtle but notable shift is taking place as conditions change. In 2003, when voters rejected Europe’s common currency in a referendum, the focus was on the krona’s ability to act as a buffer for the largest Nordic economy, but now geopolitical concerns have added a new dimension.

On top of threats from Russia and China, Donald Trump’s America First foreign policy — including threats to acquire Greenland from neighboring Denmark — underscore how smaller economies are exposed in an era of great-power rivalries.

“Sweden is now a full member of NATO and we are reinforcing our defenses alongside our EU partners,” Cecilia Rönn, a Swedish lawmaker from the Liberal party, said in an interview at the parliament in Stockholm. “But we are still standing with one foot outside, in that we are not part of the currency cooperation.”

  2. If only… my company would stop sending us emails with figures in SEK… when 70% of turn over is made in euros and 20% in dollars.

  3. No we’re not

The only party to strongly advocate for the euro polled at 1,4% in January, well below the 4% threshold.

  4. Are we?
I might be out of the loop. But i havent read anything on the news about a euro discussion.
Might just be me reading the wrong newspaper.

Our current minister of finance, Elisabeth Svantesson, said in januari that she is open to discuss joining the Euro. Meaning she wants to appoint a committee to investigate the issue after the elections in september, if she is still in power then.

Soruce, in swedish but should not be pay walled:

  6. There is a change in tune, but it’s more a soft shift than any cataclysmic change and I wouldn’t expect any policy change any time soon.

  7. Anyone who wants a seat at the table at the new EU will need to be a part of the Eurozone. Even Poland is going to adopt it soon, mark my words.

  8. CertainCertainties on

Traditionally, the Euro benefited export-heavy countries like Germany. The poor economic performance of EU countries like Greece acted as a drag on the Euro, making German exports more attractive.

Recently, global events have radically changed the discourse. Rather than a shell to benefit stronger EU economies, there is a legitimate push for the Euro to be a default global currency. Smaller currencies like the krona are vulnerable to exploitation in a world run by oligarchs. A safe haven is needed. For Sweden, surely that’s worth thinking about.

  9. short answer: we aren’t, this is just a push from the bigger institutions to sow the seed of “the masses are for this” when in reality this will hurt us tremendously.

like 90% of the house loans are on variable rates and that rate is heavily determined by our centralbank, riksbanken. joining the euro means forfeiting the currency politics to the European central bank and thus we loos the most important tool in regards for the Swedish people not geting fucked.
