Canada and Switzerland have already faced off once in the Olympic women’s hockey tournament, but the stakes are now much higher with a trip to the gold medal game on the line.

The score from their preliminary round meeting might be deceiving. Canada won 4-0, but the Canadians were shut out in the first period and led only 1-0 through two periods. Can Switzerland figure out how to last the full length of the game defensively?

If Canada can put at least a couple of goals on the board, it has to feel extremely positive about its chances. The Swiss scored only once in a quarterfinal win over Finland and combined for only one goal against Canada, Finland and the USA in group play. Switzerland’s offense desperately needs a jolt to win on Monday and avoid the bronze medal game.

For Canada, a win on Monday would present the opportunity for the nation to win its sixth women’s hockey gold medal in a span of seven Olympics.

Canada vs. Switzerland live updates, highlights from 2026 Olympic women’s hockey game

3:58 p.m.: The second period has begun.

Both teams are still looking to break the shutout, with Canada on the front foot.

End of the first period: Canada 0, Switzerland 0

3:40 p.m.: We’re scoreless at the end of one.

Canada has outshot its opponent 12-1, but Braendli has been the star of the show. On the other side, the Swiss have had limited zone time and offensive entries.

Right now, it’s a deadlock in Milan. The winner advances to face the United States on Thursday.

3:39 p.m.: As the clock winds under a minute in the first, Ella Shelton walks in from the left and gets a shot on Braendli, and then the Canadians get a rebound opportunity as well; but, the Swiss goalie swallows it up.

She has 11 saves in the first 20 minutes.

3:33 p.m.: Canada has its best chance so far, with the puck getting by Braendli before the Swiss are able to clear it from the line.

Seconds later, the Swiss goaltender makes another save as we get to a stoppage with three minutes left in the first.

3:32 p.m.: With less than five minutes left in the first, Switzerland does not have a shot.

Canada had the better of the chances throughout the power play, but the best opportunity was ripped wide.

3:27 p.m.: Switzerland has the first power play of the game.

It’s an illegal hit on Emma Maltais, sending the Swiss to the man advantage looking for their first shot.

3:21 p.m.: Almost midway through the first, the game is still 0-0. Canada leads the shot margin 2-0, with Switzerland not having much zone time.

Both teams have been feeling out each other in the opening frame.

3:16 p.m.: Canada has it’s first Grade-A chance, with Laura Stacey entering the zone and getting right to the front of the net, but the shot is put away by Andrea Braendli.

3:15 p.m.: Three minutes in and the shots are 1-0 to Canada.

Switzerland already has three offsides penalties, getting stopped each time they try to enter the zone.

3:11 p.m.: The puck has dropped and we are underway in Milan.

3:08 p.m.: The teams are on the ice.

Canada, the defending gold medalists, can set up a rematch with the United States. On the other side, Switzerland would pull off one of the biggest upsets in Olympic history.

3:00 p.m.: Canada vs. Switzerland is moments away.

Who will advance to the gold medal game?

2:47 p.m.: The lines for team Canada are out.

All eyes are on Poulin, who centers the top line.

2:35 p.m.: Switzerland’s women’s team continues to be the ultimate underdog story at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Games, recently punching their ticket to the semifinals after a gritty 1-0 shutout upset over Finland.

The squad is centered around the legendary Alina Müller, who just became the nation’s all-time Olympic goal-scoring leader, and captain Lara Stalder, while goaltender Andrea Brändli has been a literal wall, stopping 40 shots in their latest playoff win.

2:20 p.m.: Alongside Poulin, the legendary “Captain Clutch” is flanked by an elite supporting cast, including record-breaking point-scorer Sarah Nurse, star forward Sarah Fillier, and a stifling defense featuring veterans like Renata Fast and Jocelyne Larocque.

1:54 p.m.: Canada’s captain, Marie-Philip Poulin, is chasing history.

With one more goal, Poulin will be the all-time leading scorer in Olympics history. She scored in Canada’s last match to tie the record, and today against Switzerland she has a chance to etch her name in the record books.

If she does not do it against the Swiss, she’ll have to find the net against a United States team that is riding a five-game shutout streak.

1:32 p.m.: Whoever wins today’s game already knows their opponent: the United States of America.

Team USA, the tournament’s juggernaut, punched their ticket to the gold medal game earlier today with a 5-0 domination of Sweden. It was the team’s fifth consecutive shutout, now outscoring opponents 31-1 this tournament.

1:15 p.m.: Today’s matchup between Canada and Switzerland is a high-stakes semifinal showdown with a trip to the gold medal game on the line. While Canada has historically dominated this series — including a 4-0 win in the preliminary round — the Swiss have proven they can be a defensive nightmare, coming off a gritty 1-0 shutout upset over Finland.

The focal point for Canada will be captain Marie-Philip Poulin, who just tied the all-time Olympic goal record in her return from injury and looks to claim the title for herself today. Switzerland will counter with goaltender Andrea Brändli, who has been the tournament’s standout at the net, likely needing another 40-save performance to keep the clinical Canadian offense at bay.
