Spain Orders Investigation into AI-Generated Child Abuse Content on Social Media
Pedro Sánchez announced that the government would turn to the prosecutor’s office with a request to “investigate crimes that X, Meta, and TikTok may commit by creating and disseminating child pornography using their artificial intelligence.”

According to Reuters report

The government of Spain has tasked the prosecutor’s office with investigating materials on the X, Meta, and TikTok platforms that, according to reports, may contain artificially generated content depicting sexual violence against children.

The Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the government would ask the prosecutor’s office to investigate crimes that X, Meta, and TikTok may commit by creating and disseminating child pornography using artificial intelligence.

“These platforms undermine the mental health, dignity, and rights of our children. The state cannot allow this. The impunity of these giants must end.”

According to media sources earlier this month, Sánchez announced a series of measures to curb online violence and protect children, including a proposed ban on social media platforms for people under 16 years of age.

In November, Sánchez stated that the Spanish Parliament would investigate Meta’s conduct regarding potential breaches of user privacy on Facebook and Instagram.

Context and Potential Impact on Online Content Regulation

Experts note that this government approach underscores the need for stricter oversight of the use of artificial intelligence and the protection of children on the internet. It is expected that Spain will strengthen coordination between government bodies and platforms to more quickly identify and remove harmful content and to increase the transparency of algorithms.

Additionally, the country continues to monitor developments and plans further steps in legislation to adapt regulation to rapid technological change and to ensure the online safety of young people.
