An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred in the afternoon on Tuesday, February 17th, 2026, at 5:31 pm local time near Bugojno, Central Bosnia Canton, Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia & Herzegovina, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Romania’s National Institute for Earth Physics (NIEP), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.8, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.3, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 2.5, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.5, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.6, and the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 4.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Zabrisce (pop. 4,300) located 5 km from the epicenter, Bila (pop. 4,400) 5 km away, Orguz (pop. 4,400) 6 km away, and Livno (pop. 11,700) 9 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bugojno (pop. 41,400) located 51 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Travnik (pop. 31,100) located 76 km from the epicenter, Mostar (pop. 104,500) 91 km away, Zenica (pop. 164,400) 91 km away, and Banja Luka (pop. 221,100) 109 km away.
