BAE Systems Australia has conducted trials to evaluate the autonomy of its 8×8 Autonomous Tactical Light Armour System (ATLAS) Collaborative Combat Variant (CCV) vehicle, a spokesperson for the company told Janes on 18 February.

According to the spokesperson, the trials were conducted in the southern state of Victoria in late November 2025. “Trial activity included testing at all levels of autonomy – from teleoperation to waypoint-based navigation to full ‘sense and avoid autonomy’,” the spokesperson added.

The spokesperson said the latest trials focused on the “technical capabilities of the platform at tactical speeds”.

“The highest level of autonomy achieved was go-to-point and waypoint navigation using ‘sense and avoid’,” the spokesperson added, detailing the evaluation results.

The spokesperson described the ATLAS CCV as a “fully functional prototype demonstrator”.

“With a customer requirement and funding, we could develop the current system to [a] combat-ready prototype within two years,” the spokesperson said.

According to the BAE Systems Australia spokesperson, the ATLAS CCV features an enhanced variant of one-to-four autonomy software, which enables one operator to control four vehicles.

“We have demonstrated one-to-four operation using other platforms, such as the M113AS4 Modular Robotic Vehicle (MRV),” the spokesperson added.

BAE Systems Australia previously delivered 20 M113AS4 MRVs to the Australian Army as a part of the service’s Optionally Crewed Combat Vehicle (OCCV) programme.

The spokesperson said, “We will continue to learn lessons from internal testing that will require capability expansion in the software and sensors, and we will also start to see customer requirements mature for a future capability, and we will feed these into the development of the platform.
