Hi everyone! Our family is visiting the Balkans this summer, and we’re excited to explore Kosovo as well. From what I’ve heard, it’s beautiful and safe for tourists. I have a few questions.

I’m also a YouTuber from Northern Europe (Estonia) and I’d love to make a video about Kosovo, similar to one I made about Bosnia

  1. What are the rules around filming in Kosovo – is it allowed? How about flying a drone?
  2. I understand Kosovo has complicated relations with some neighbors – could you explain how border crossings work, so I don’t run into problems with Serbia or North Macedonia?
  3. Most importantly – what would you recommend visiting with a family, and where to stay? Are there campsites? We’ll be traveling with a car that has a rooftop tent.

Any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

  1. 1. You can film wherever you want and people will be respectful if you are respectful. In public areas I heard you needed a permit but I am not sure now cause that was couple of years ago when drones were the new hot thing.
    2. Not with some – only with Serbia. With North Macedonia its going to be your normal border crossing like everywhere in the world. If you plan to come from Serbia in Kosovo – you won’t have any problems since Kosovo will accept you but if you try the opposite (from Kosovo entering Serbia) they might refuse your entrance based on petty speculative theories. Just avoid trying to enter Serbia from Kosovo and all your border crossing issues are gone.
    3. During summer go in Rugova mountains. Don’t settle for mediocre views – just go further in Rugova… and if you can try going a little off paved road… 100% you will find a spot that looks and feels beautiful and heavenly. You seem like you are an experienced camper and you know this already – but take some bug repellent(Autan or something of sorts) cause on the dawn insects there go mad.

  2. Hi, we’re glad to welcome you into our country. Filming is basically always allowed unless explicitly told not to (Private property things of the sort). Drone is also generally okay (not near the airport). Border crossing through macedonia is no problem but with serbia its a bit more complicated though i doubt you’ll encounter any problems in that regard. Camping is great near Rugova valley.

  3. 1. I think its generally allowed to film, but always for permission, maybe in cities it might be okay, in villages I would be more careful around that, always asking for permission(esp if you record people). As for legally, I think in north its a bit more complicated in other regions idk, don’t have experiences with that, but would suggest best to do it in short inervals.

    2. So we have problems only with serbia, in fact they do, with others you can go and come in as you please, with serbia if u didn’t enter from serbia into Kosovo, then u can’t enter there without first going to Macedonia or Montenegro, so in conclusion entering Kosovo from serbia, u can reenter serbia, entering Kosovo from Macedonia or other countries, trying to enter serbia not allowed.

    3. So, if you can let us know what your family is into, might be helpful, would be good if you can learn some albanian words, esp if you plan to go into villages/hiking, I would suggest Prizren if you want some history, Gjakova for the old baazar (and a cave in that city). Peja for its hiking opportunities (climibing, adventure park etc), I wouldn’t suggest the capital during summer, its okay but the traffic is crazy, but good for one day maybe to see the Cathedral or see the big buildings, might be good, library, or food, depending what you let us know, we can provide more recommendations on things you want to do, but I would definitely suggest Peja, Gjakove, Therande and Rahovec for some wine on the way to Prizren.
