The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 3.1 quake in Spain near Almeria, Andalusia, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Wednesday, February 18th, 2026, at 11:38 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well. A third agency, Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Turrillas (pop. 250) located 6 km from the epicenter, and Tabernas (pop. 3,200) 6 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nijar (pop. 26,500) located 13 km from the epicenter, Huercal de Almeria (pop. 14,900) 19 km away, and Almeria (pop. 196,900) 24 km away. In Vicar (pop. 22,900, 36 km away), Roquetas de Mar (pop. 94,900, 39 km away), and El Ejido (pop. 84,700, 52 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
