When German spies start gathering secret information about the U.S., they probably shouldn’t appoint someone named Zimmermann as their chief and send him telegrams.

Kind of an interesting pattern with the looming decay of US influence that countries are revisiting their legal framework which is heavily influenced by the post war order. Japan is also set to remove some of the US-driven restrictions in national security.

Given the ambiguity of the future sharing of intelligence, it is natural that Germany try to build its own intelligence capacity. The bigger question is whether Germany can strike a balance between security needs and civil liberties.Â

Have you seen any German spies?
Nein!
Nine? That many?!

Everything old is new again it seems for Germany and Europe. It was clear that when Mertz threw his support behind Netanyahu’s genocide in Gaza and illegal attack on Iran (as Mertz famously stated “Israel is doing the West’s dirty work”) that he was taking Germany back towards a fascistic mindset and these policies follow from there. He’s probably trying to outflank the AfD but in the process he is essentially taking Germany in the same direction at a slower pace and with more legitimacy attached to it’s devolution as a country.

Oh dear. Intelligence has never been our strong point, this is going to be hilarious.
