>Police have seized art posters from a Canberra music venue and bar that depict world leaders and others, including Donald Trump and Elon Musk, wearing Nazi uniforms
>Under laws passed in January, hate symbol display offences don’t apply if it’s deemed for a religious, academic, educational, artistic, literary or scientific purpose and contrary to the public interest.
So the new anti-hate laws have solely been used to suppress legitimate left-wing political protest imagery? Colour me shocked.
>The five posters were seized and would be investigated to determine whether charges would be laid under hate symbols laws, it said.
And the police removed private property and shut down the venue, forcing them to lose revenue by cancelling an interstate show, despite the fact that they weren’t even sure if a crime had been committed? Cherry on top.

Hmmm I wonder where the complaint came from… might have something to do with the neighbours

They should take CCTV footage of the cops involved and place their images right beside the posters.
Australia is creeping towards an authoritarian state.

This is the slippery slope, where ‘genuine’ use of a Nazi symbol is confused with an aloof or comical depiction. Should we now ban movies that have Nazis in them?

I guess the Israeli embassy didn’t have much for its admin staff to do that day except lodge spurious complaints.

You’re telling me that the exact thing that people predicted would happen is happening? Shocking.

This is exactly what people said would happen when these laws were up for discussion, they grant to much power and are used by the state to encroach on free speech.
Government (nearly all parties btw) needs to stop eroding our rights, we need should have a right to free speech, a right to housing, etc. yet the government continues with laws and policies that jeopardise what we have.

If they are forced to remove the posters I hope they are replaced with posters containing the same faces but now in clown suits.

Which one is promoting hate speech the most from the following:
1. A One Nation party that is founded on the principle of discrimination.
2. A former/current opposition government that was Leying the ground work for significant discrimination against immigrants.
3. A current government beating the crap out of its own citizens for standing in a city while a war criminal is invited to the country to be paraded around.
4. A random bar owner pointing out reality with a few posters in a single physical location.

I sure hope nobody makes the files available and prints out the stickers for everybody to stick everywhere. That would create such a headache!

All of this could have been avoided if Netanyahu, The Coalition, One Notion and News Corpse didn’t play “Get Albo” instead of offering solidarity with Australia & PM.

Oh, look. Laws restricting freedom of expression that aren’t going after the “right” people. I’m fucking shocked.
You get what you ask for people. Wasn’t long ago reddit was clapping like circus seals about laws like this.

Defending modern fascists from criticism by leveraging a law passed after an antisemitic massacre, classic Australian police.
That said, federal Labor passed these laws instead of having the resolve to deal with stochastic terrorism in the most sensible operational fashion. They did so because it was easier for them and did not require sustained determination or having to culturally reform intelligence and policing agencies.

Often these actions aren’t about the posters or the people who put them up. It’s about cowing others into silence with the threat of prosecution.
I’m all for banning Nazi imagery and hate symbols – when they are used to support or promote said ideology or iconography. Putting a swastika on politicians is a tale as old as time and satire is protected. Can we honestly not talk about how even a poster like this probably isn’t satire but more an accurate representation given Musk and Trump’s behaviour and words?
