From 2026, the canton of Zug will introduce a new subsidy that will provide around 30% of the childcare costs for parents with children in daycare. These funds are expressly intended to reduce the financial burden on parents and to make it easier for both parents to work.

The city of Zug is currently discussing two very different implementation options:

Option 1 proposes to increase the daycare tariffs. This would largely compensate for the cantonal subsidy. For many families there would only be an effective relief of less than 20%, and families with only one working parent would have to pay more than they do today.

Option 2 would greatly reduce childcare costs and make daycare very affordable for families.

In our view, option 1 defeats the purpose of the cantonal subsidy and leads to new inequalities in treatment between families.

Suggested solution:

We prefer option 2 because it effectively supports the employment of both parents and positions Zug as a particularly child- and family-friendly city.

If the city council does not decide on option 2, it should at least be ensured that the cantonal subsidy is passed on fully and transparently to the parents and that a real cost reduction of at least 30% is achieved – without tariff increases that weaken this effect.

What about the arguments that this same regulation suggests less employees per child?

Our child was in Kita in Zug and it was a trade secret that Kita operated knowingly understaffed. They just continued to pay the fines whenever the inspector caught them! With the new regulation they’re fine free. Just the thought that we payed huge amount of money for our child to be taken care of by an alone 16 year old in training makes me so angry and sad. Of course the Kita had recurring accidents and staff turnover – when an ambulance stops at Kita one day because a baby fell on their head from a height – it’s stops being, oh Zug Regulation is so unfair.

Have politicians made directly accountable for the accidents and it’s a deal!
