Team Canada’s men’s hockey squad is looking to return back to the Olympic gold-medal game for the first time since 2014. Standing in their way is a strong Finland team, featuring a battle-tested roster led by their own set of notable stars.
The score is currently 2-1 for Finland to start the third period. The Finns initially got out to a 2-0 lead after Mikko Rantanen first found the back of the net at the 3:05 mark of the opening frame during a powerplay. It was the result of Canada’s Sam Bennett crashing the net and picking up a penalty. With Canada on the powerplay early in the second period, Erik Haula broke free and scored a short-handed goal for Finland’s second of the game.
Canada finally got on the board at the 5:40 mark of the second period thanks to a goal from Samon Reinhart on the powerplay. Connor McDavid picked up an assist, marking his 12th point of the tournament, which is a new Olympic record.
Team Canada comes into this semifinal matchup having finally been tested by Czechia in the quarterfinal, needing a comeback to win 4-3 in overtime.
With that said, the top storyline now is that captain Sidney Crosby will not play the semifinal, according to the team, after getting injured against Czechia. Connor McDavid will step in as captain with Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon as alternates.
The winner of this semifinal will move onto the gold-medal game Sunday at 8:10 a.m. EST/5:10 a.m. PST. The loser will play in the bronze-medal game Saturday at 2:10 p.m. EST/11:10 a.m. PST.
