The Indian Men’s Hockey Team suffered a 0–2 defeat against Spain in a FIH Pro League encounter, with the Spanish side capitalising on key moments while India failed to convert sustained pressure into goals. Strikes from Ignacio Abajo (6’) and Ignacio Cobos (36’), one in each half, proved decisive.
India started brightly, moving the ball with pace and purpose. However, Spain’s counter-attacking threat paid dividends early when Abajo deflected home in the sixth minute to hand his side the lead. India remained composed, circulating possession through midfield and probing the Spanish defence. Abhishek nearly equalised late in the first quarter, only to be denied by an excellent save from goalkeeper Luis Calzado.
The second quarter saw end-to-end action. Spain earned a Penalty Corner in the 24th minute, but Suraj Karkera produced a sharp save to keep India within touching distance. Both sides created half-chances, yet the scoreline remained unchanged at the break with Spain holding a slender 1–0 advantage.
Spain began the third quarter on the front foot. Karkera made another important save before Cobos struck in the 36th minute, finishing from close range after finding space inside the circle. Spain continued to press and won five PCs in the latter stages of the quarter, but India’s defence stood firm to prevent further damage.
India pushed hard in the final quarter, spending sustained periods inside Spain’s circle and earning its first PC, though it was unable to convert. India withdrew its goalkeeper in the closing minutes to add an extra outfield player, but despite the late surge, it could not find a breakthrough as Spain secured a 2–0 win.
India next face host Australia in Hobart on February 22.
