This thing has been boggling my mind for the last 9 years someone please tell me what the springbok squarepants this is. I tried running into it but nothing happened. I also fly kicked it multiple times and nothing happened….not like the movies. Damn. My guess is either they closed the portal or people were hung from this thing in the 1800's.
Anyone got any idea???
Sincerely your local concerned citizen.

Just an old sewer vent.
Hint: next time you’re in the shopping centre go to the corridor where the toilets are and read all the stuff on the wall telling the history of the place.

Buranda Ventilation Shaft – Defunct
Originally built before separated sewer systems existed. It was located on the old Tram Depot, back when this end of Brisbane was mostly industrial and light residential. The vent was designed to let the decomp gasses escape as the normal stormwater system WAS the sewer system… Yeah gross.
Eventually, the sewer system was actually developed, and the vent shaft was left in place for a while to assist in flushing out and getting rid of the stench. At some point. Once the “rectification” works were completed, the shaft was just about sealed off from the stormwater system, now only really acting as a reminder of a network that once existed.
When Buranda Shops was built. They wanted to destroy it. Council refused saying it is of historical significance. It is now heritage listed.
Cloaking device that hides Buranda as a suburb so it only shows as a locality.
Aside from the heritage aspect, at one point they were painting up it as fundraising occurred to something. Eventually it got there and they cleaned it off.
