“Cross-country Emperor” Johannes Clebo (Norway) swept six gold medals alone at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. With Clebo’s gold medal hunt, Norway set the record for the most gold medals at the Winter Olympics ever, securing the overall championship.
Clebo was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 2:06:44:08 in the men’s cross-country mass start 50km at the Tessero Cross-Country Ski Stadium in Italy on the 21st (Korea time). Previously, he won gold medals in five events, including 10km + 10km skiathlon, sprint classical, 10km interval start free, 4×7.5km relay team event, and team sprint. Eric Haydn of the U.S., who won five gold medals in speed skating at the 1980 Lake Placid Games, and Clebo, who tied the record for the most spectatorship in a single competition, became the star of the new milestone.
In addition to Klebo’s gold medal, Norway swept the gold, silver and bronze medals, with Martin Löwstöm Núenet (2:06:53) winning silver and Emile Iversen (2:07:15.5) winning bronze. Norway, which won seven gold medals, one silver, and five bronze medals in cross-country alone, secured the overall championship with 18 gold medals, 11 silver, and 11 bronze medals, beating the second-place U.S. (11 gold, 12 silver, 9 bronze).
