  1. I was surprised he’s 80 too… He’s semi retired now though, only does Saturday’s if I recall correctly. Good on him, he seems like such a sweet guy

He wouldn’t be short of cash. Retire mate and enjoy life while you can.

Let someone else step up and do the job.

  3. The montage they had last night for his birthday was great, including an appearance by the seagull 🤣

Such a teddy bear of a man. He lives in my suburb as I see him posting pics on Insta of local places. I’m yet to bump into to him but hope to one day.

  5. Glad he’s still going, even if part-time. I met him a couple of times through work and he’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met.

  6. I remember when I was a kid and we’d go see movies at Healesville Cinema and he would read the local pre-show ads at the time.

He seems like a cool guy, and it’s amazing he’s still reading news at 80.

Also he shares his birthday with me!

  7. I think to myself, I hope one day I look good at 80 and then I remember I dont look that good now and I dont think I will get better looking over time.

  8. He is just so cute. I love when he gets the giggles reporting funny animal stories… A beacon of hope on a trash network.

Feel sorry for the bloke seeing everything he’s worked for over his lifetime turning to shit in front of his eyes.

  10. Absolute legend! I met him at the Melbourne cat lovers show a few years ago, he was volunteering in one of the rescue cat booths, he’s so sweet and seems like such a genuine nice man

  11. Was just wondering the other day about his age. Because he doesn’t look that old but he’s been around forever.

Watching him present for days on end after Black Saturday, you could see the toll it took on him. He got pale and bruised looking, thinner, and his voice was hoarse. He was obviously affected badly and knew before the public that Brian Naylor had been killed. IIRC Tony Jones delivered that piece of news because Hitch wasn’t sure he could keep up the professional facade. I genuinely think he should have received some official award or commendation for his work over that terrible time.

2 times I’ll always remember Peter hitchener:

Once was watching the news and some random seagull appeared and wouldn’t fuck off (was really funny)

And another time was – it must of been like the end of the news and leading into (??) hey hey it’s Saturday – and the camera panned – and there’s Peter hitchener in a suit jacket, shirt, tie and showed him from the side, and under the desk – he was wearing thongs and adidas snap pants (those “trendy” pants from back in the day) – absolute blink and you’ll miss it moment, but fuck it was funny

Always loved him, Brian naylor and Peter Mitchell (Channel 7)

Nothing summarises the refusal of boomers to hand over the keys to the castle than an 80 year old news anchor

  14. I love the fact he’s gay and nobody has ever cared about that. It shows how far society has come.

  15. Staple of Australian Televesion. Not sure how long he’s been on TV, but feels like my whole life.
