  1. Since they were already preparing for the flight out I’m assuming they had enough fuel to keep the APU running throughout the night.

Otherwise they would’ve probably needed to evacuate due to a lack of ventilation.

  2. Wtf since when does a major airport close for the night?? Shouldn’t munich be 24/7 with full service st all times? Le wut.

  3. That is absolutely ridiculous, and a disgrace in this day and age there isn’t protocols in place to deal with this.

  4. Glad I wasn’t on that flight as I would’ve absolutely popped open the exit doors and walked to the terminal. A jail cell is more comfortable than my seat in 21A. At least I can go horizontal then, plus it’d make for a great story later (after the 40-60 hours of community service).

  5. This is insane, what if any of those passengers needed medication, had additional needs? My wife’s health would be affected for weeks or months afterwards if this happened.

The articled says that walking to the terminal is prohibited by law. But there must be exceptions. Keeping 123 passengers as hostages is more illegal.

  7. Genuine question: what if someone on that plane had a medical emergency? Would they not allow outside help to come help the passenger and disembark them?

  8. I can’t believe all 123 passengers kept their cool during this. Especially families with small kids would go crazy.

The appropriate response is then to absolute demolish the entire snack and bar service supplies, maybe the better things from the onboard sales items which seem to be essential on every Lufthansa flight, and then have the wildest party possible

  10. I would call the police or something, they should be able to come inside and walk people off, and if they can’t I would use it as an excuse to open the doors.

Yeah I am 100% accepting the arrest and trying to open the emergency door myself. Fuck that.

  12. Wow this is seriously crazy. I wonder if the people can get compensated by the airport but I doubt it. I‘m also sorry for the Lufthansa employees on that flight, that must have been a weird night. Honestly I would have thought that airports have some kind of emergency plan for something like that.

  13. Yeah, no. I am not staying calm. You let me off the fucking plane or we are throwing hands. Because as it stands, this is unjust imprisonment and I am suing your pants off.

  14. They seem to be more bothered about not breaking a law about walking to the terminal more than a law about not kidnapping 150 people overnight. I would have called the police and began a riot.

  15. I have landed at a German airport 1 minute before the airport would close. During rollout, the runway lights turned off. They are very, very strict about these rules, and for some reason they don’t take safety into account when enforcing them.

  16. I am sure they called around and everyone gave the very typical German answer of: “this does not fall in my responsibilities”.

If there is no guideline or rule book for Germans to know what to do in a situation like this, there is simply nothing that can be done. You surely can’t just do something on your own, that’s against the rule!

    I hate us sometimes

  17. At that point I would’ve called the police to come release me from being held hostage on the plane. By various laws in the EU if you’ve been sitting for more than 2/3 hours on the ground on the plane you are legally allowed to be let out.

  18. I had a sort of similar experience at Frankfurt Airport during Covid. We had to get tested at the airport (due to additional travel restrictions being imposed by Germany on that day in light of a new strain being discovered in UK, where I was flying from) and by the time we landed – 9pm or so – the emergency test centre was closed, so they made all the passangers from my flight spend the night at an airport gate to wait until the centre re-opened at 6am. We basically received no blankets (it was December), and no water/snacks until maybe 4 or 5am?

Baffling experience. Luckily my stop was Frankfurt so I was out by 8am.. but I remember there being folk who had missed connecting flights to US/Asia/South Africa etc..

  19. I would open that aircraft door/slide, even if that meant court trial later. I’m sure my lawyer(s) would have a party against Lufthansa later, given the virality of things that would have developed…

  20. I’m pretty easy going and am the kind of person who sticks with the rules but expected to sit for hours on the tarmac? I’m opening the emergency exit.

  21. Sounds like unlawful detention. I hope at least someone files a criminal complaint.

What happens if a flight needs to make an emergency landing after the airport closes? Do they just redirect them to land on the autobahn?

The article mentioned the flight was 1.5 hours. So they either willingly flew to an airport that was not prepared to handle them or they had 1.5 hours to prepare for a late flight and they failed to do so.

  22. Ah, the German “Ordnung must sein” 😀

It was loudly publicized recently when a Condor Flight DE1513 on final, also to Munich Airport, had to divert, because it was past the time the airport closes.

  23. Why was it allowed to fly to munich in first place? I assume someone from munichs airport needs to give this green light?

NO WONDER people are still worried about planes crashing when the executives running a major airline lack the competence to organise a 5 minute bus trip in the event of a situation like this.

This airline is the worst and we will never fly with them again! Our dog in her case was 1kg overweight so my wife had to miss the first flight from Toulouse to Munich. She bought a new ticket, showed up to the flight the next morning at 0600 and they said they never issued the ticket. They didn’t let her on the flight and then said she was a no show. Then charged us for a third flight which we didn’t want. We ended up getting her an Air France ticket and everything worked perfectly. Never fly Lufthansa!
