What the hell is wrong with our society? I know but I want other people to admit how we all keep reinforcing this exploitation of vulnerability.

Ive navigated all types of homelessness and it makes work VERY sifficult to maintain. Repeated dislocation due to OIDV and stalking makes it hard to maintain basic community connections. I come from extreme privilege and still landed here against all odds. Im grateful this woman and her family are connected to charity but the heartlessness and overwhelm is something most peoplle simply refuse to acknowledge whilst exposing their NIMBYism.

Apparently the Lying Nasty Party are going to fix it, according to them, because … 🤔 … “blames labor and CFMEU”.

… also, they’re known as the Lying Nasty Party for a reason.

Disgusting to see our politicians playing the whataboutism game, refusing to answer questions and instead blaming their predecessors. They say they want to keep kids off the street and out of lives of crime – housing these families is exactly how you start that process.

  3. Bonus on top of all this is she’s navigating sleeping rough in an area where the local council are actively and increasingly hostile towards rough sleepers and the houseless.

  4. Queensland can fast track construction for a 10 day sports carnival, but not build adequate public housing.

We could be so much better than this. It’s beyond disgraceful.

  5. Fun fact. If just one of her children commits a crime and ends up in youth detention it will cost the taxpayers over $2000 per day.

Or if she can not look after her kids and they end up in residential care it will cost the taxpayers around $2.5m for a year

  6. And of course Sam O’Connor only responds with bullshit propaganda. Fuck this government.

  7. I’m going to be homeless on Friday to get out of DV, it is what it is, I’m an adult so don’t want pity, just to rant. I’m a woman in her 20s who is still recovering from a major heart attack and bypass surgery, I’ve called so many places and there is just no accommodation. People always recommend askizzy but there was limited support there too.

Also thinking about just trying to stay for a bit longer but I’m very scared for my safety and the police don’t do anything. I don’t know.

As the day gets closer I think I just give up because there’s no way being on the street is something I can handle, even for a night I don’t think as I’m already at the end of my rope, no idea how this woman has lasted living like this. Oh well, I always hoped I wouldn’t join the statistics of this homelessness crisis but I guess I’m here now. I hope none of you ever have to be in this position 🙁

And yet I know of a “couple” in housing commission, and the boyfriend is on nearly 3k a fortnight doing concrete work.

Really does need a overhaul and shakedown..

  9. I recently met a homeless woman who was very clearly intellectually disabled and she claimed she was pregnant. She was dropped by her social worker without another lined up and she basically lost everything because of that. I took her to the hospital for help but it’s just not fucking okay. She could have been kidnapped, hurt, abused or worse

Why do people have 7 kids if they can’t afford them!!! Yes this woman’s situation is terrible, but kids are a lot more expensive than contraception and she could have saved a lot of suffering for these poor children

“Through this process, we can prioritise the most vulnerable Queenslanders to support them into safe and stable housing.”

I’m muddled. When I went to the department of housing with my support coordinator I was told there was no prioritising people and that it’s first come first served and that everyone gets put on the same waiting list. Or is that a different thing? Sorry I find all this stuff really confusing and am having trouble navigating it all and I feel like I’m wandering around in the dark

  12. This is intentional. Suffering is required for capitalism to work effectively for the ruling class. If we guaranteed everyone a decent minimum standard of living, the rest of the working class would have more bargaining power. They would feel free to change jobs or work fewer hours, which would force the price of labor (wages) to increase.

Furthermore, turning housing, the most basic of human rights, into an investment vehicle for the wealthy to exploit is just as evil.

I read this as she was refusing social housing provided and thought it might be comments to the effect ‘you try to help people and they just won’t help themselves’. When I hear the reality of some of this social housing puts you out nowhere making it difficult to continue work or looking for work, or access to other needs such as continued education etc. That and it’s generally only temporary so may be only a few weeks before you are moved again.

Oh and that jamming a whole lot of people down on their luck together in yet more uncertain housing isn’t conducive to rehabilitation.

Frankly as shitty as camping is as a living environment, social housing has its own swath of other issues that can be worse.

  14. My hope is that the ABC article creates enough media traction that this family gets housed. Regardless of what you think of her as a mother or as a person, there are 7 children who are exposed to severe risk by living like this.

  15. Wow. Offered a house and she refused it. You’d think a homeless person would take whatever house they could get.

  16. Signal-Treacle-5512 on

She’d get a bit of money on Centrelink for all those kids. She could get a rental but would probably be discriminated against being a single mother of 6. There needs to be some common sense in all this but she did refuse housing and sounds like she hasn’t tried to look for private rentals.

  17. 7 people? I guess only some rural properties maybe able to house her family adequately.

She may have to move away from Petrie.

  18. Abject-Presence4689 on

    She gets (roughly)

    $998 a fortnight Parenting Payment

$295 a fortnight for the 16 year old Family Tax A

$227 0-12 years old or $295 13-15 years old Family Tax A each child

$134-$193 for Family Tax Part B each child

    Lets conservatively say 4 kids 0-12 and 2 13-15 and 1 16

= all up she’s earning well in excess of $3000 a fortnight in centerlink with no rental or utility overheads yet relies on charities to survive? And says she cannot survive on $18 per day but gets over $150 per day to survive on?

How does any of this add up to something other than someone trying to get even more handouts?

Edit: added for “each child” in case some numpty thinks the maths doesn’t math.

  19. DealerGullible4673 on

7 kids. It’s sad to see it got to that point but 7 kids and for all of them she’s on Centrelink for. I’m not quite sure if governments are there to provide support for people in need so they could stand on their feet or to provide support for people who thought it’s government’s responsibility to provide shelter and food for their kids when their responsibility is to have kids only and keep having them regardless of their circumstances?!?! Sorry but no sympathy. I hope best for the kids and wish they don’t follow the path once they’re able to stand on their feet

  20. Basic-Round-6301 on

You can survive on $18 a day per person. Id rather this with a roof over my head than $30 a day per person and be living in a tent

  21. Apprehensive_BongRip on

Remember, asking to stop allowing more people to come into the country before this person is housed is a ‘racist argument’.

  22. Mickey_Bricks_ on

and so are 1000 other cunts. the reality is single mothers get first priority and everyone else can get fucked, theres too much demand and they end up turning away virtually everyone, the so called support is completely overwhelmed.

  23. DeathInHeartBeat on

Correct me if I’m wrong. 7 kids plus the pension for this chick means she would be getting like $3k a fortnight. $3k for doing fuck all.

    Lol.

    I don’t have much sympathy.

  24. I had to provide proof also by showing dozens upon dozens of rentals I’d applied for deemed to be in my affordability range and the lack of approval. I’m a single mother of 3 and wasn’t working when I was offered a house, my youngest had just started prep. Took us 6.5 years and got the offer 3 years ago in April. There’s so many hoops you have to jump through.

  25. Crime-raider-poopy42 on

Like surely there’s a point you realise you can’t have any more kids because you can’t afford it. That part of this story is entirely preventable

  26. disturbed_wench on

I may not be popular for this BUT
The other side of the problem is that even if they increase the income limit for people – last i heard it was something stupid like a 10 year wait list for dept of housing. If theres not enough places for people already on the list its only gonna make the problem 100 times worse by increasing the payment limits which will increase the amount of people on that waiting list. Its sad and regrettable but without more public housing available its all a moot point from what i can see

  27. They just cleared out the tents from the park on Russell St in South Brisbane about a week ago. There were roughly a dozen who were living there.

I can’t help but wonder where they’ve gone.

With the housing and rental market the way it is, an increasing number of people are one unfortunate incident away from being in a similar situation, regardless of background.
