They were given 6+months to find other arrangements, this isn’t a failure on the council or LEO’s. But Police Vic for not having a suitable station for their workforce. I’m sure parking arrangements could have been made with the council of Vic Pol went to the table but sounds like they did nothing and just let the LEO’s deal with the issue

Sounds like the police need to protect and serve their own officers by providing safe parking for their officers.

(I realise that the Vic police motto is uphold the right).

Why should they get free parking when it’s just their personal vehicle? If they’re actually having to personally pay fines incurred in doing undercover stakeouts that’s a different issue, though personally I’d find it suspicious if a car had been sitting out all day in Richmond and hadn’t gotten any fines. Either way surely this should be governed as a matter of state law rather than relying on VicPol negotiating with all councils.

  4. The vehicles purpose or an issued permit may make it exempt from parking laws, but not the vehicle owners’ occupation.

I used to work in Richmond near the yarra, and the laws in the local streets near the office went from all day free parking, to paid all day parking to 4 hour limited paid parking inside 18 months. Council just cared about the thousands they were pulling in fees per week.

My friend worked in the Melbourne City Council and was doing work in a Melbourne City Council vehicle. Still got ticketed.

  6. Not even nurses typically get a free ride for their personal vehicles when parking at a *hospital*.

I 100% believe the safety concerns emerging from the station unarmed, especially at night.

But how did we get to the position where the station design is clearly deficient? Was it designed or selected with these permits for personal vehicles in mind? Seems like a huge oversight.

  7. Welcome to being treated the same as every other person.

If they want anything to change, they should be getting their employer to provide secure off-street parking, or find a the same sort of paid parking the rest of us have to deal with.

None of us get to use the ‘But I was working’ excuse, regardless of how special the circumstances of the job.

They should likely be thankful they don’t have to park in the South Melbourne council area.

I think the last time this issue propped up the cops targeted council employees with penalty notices and PBTs. Got their permits back pretty quick.

Looking at Google maps there’s at least 25 spots at Richmond police station, plus 3 reserved spots in church st.

How many staff do they have on at any one time? Particularly at night?

If there’s too many police vehicles sitting around that are never used they could move some of them to a station that has room for them.

  10. Do they have to drive to work? If they feel unsafe at night going to their cars. Is there a organisation that could provide them with protection? Does there organisation have the ability to transport people?

  11. On one hand, lol.

But seriously. I’ve had the displeasure of attending that police station a few times. They’re actually decent. Probably the busiest station in the state. The amount of shit they see and deal with to keep that suburb resembling something that isn’t quite clean but isn’t a complete fucking cess pit, the council should be treating them like royalty.

Vicpol could you redeploy their staff to other stations for a week and it would be carnage.

  12. What a crying ass shame😂. Now, let’s see tram drivers lose points for running red lights.
