There’s some genuinely good news for Melbourne Airport and transport in Victoria.
Construction has officially commenced on the Melbourne Airport Rail Link, marking a significant step toward finally delivering a long-awaited rail connection between the airport and the city. Early works around Sunshine are underway, laying the groundwork for the future link.

At the same time, Melbourne Airport is progressing its $4.5 billion international terminal expansion, which will increase capacity, add new gates, and improve passenger facilities.

I look forward to its completion shortly after uber start doing helicopter drone rides
* edit for typo
wow. finally. geez.
Can someone remind me if the platform is underground/ undercover? I have the feeling its elevated and outside – like dog’s balls freezing in winter….
While a necessary project to enable the Melbourne Rail Link, it’s also a necessary project to enable other projects (such as the electrification of the Melton line).
Personally, I believe calling this part of the Melbourne Rail Link is a bit of a stretch, as this project could be done, and nothing is done about the link between Sunshine and the Airport, the critical part of the Melbourne Airport line.
Accompanied by a substantial rebuild of Tottenham station, which is good, while simultaneously not expending the Ashley St underpass, which is bad.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE – just fix the kerbside uber and taxi area! They could do that quickly. All they need to do is model Singapore where taxi’s and Ubers drive in for a pickup and then drive through into another lane to exit. All the cars having to cross each other is a disaster. And FFS get pedestrians off the same level as the roadways if they are going to the carpark. Traffic coming in to drop off or pick up should not be waiting at pedestrian crossings. I can’t believe they built a pedestrian bridge from the carpark and actually made it enter the terminal at road level so the pedestrians hold up drop-off traffic at the busiest times.
It would be nice to see an airport rail link, but I won’t be holding my breath… This sounds more like the spark that will light the fire that’ll maybe one day lead to an actual airport rail link.
Also, who or what exactly is paying for it?
At this point I’m honestly surprised there hasn’t been effort to do an airport rail link out to Avalon around about where Lara station is… It would probably be cheaper too.
Fark, I thought it was the end of February, not the first of April!
Living in melbourne but not being brought up here it’s always seemed completely cooked and the height of state politicical corruption that this isn’t already a thing
I catch the 901 from Broadmeadows station to Melbourne Airport about about 3 to 4 times a year. It would be very easy for the government to improve that service even as a stopgap. I would say that the current service is passable for my needs but still kind of crappy
10 yrs to get all these done. If it ever gets done. And I’m betting my last dollar the cost blowout will be enough to build a new airport.
I’ll care about this when SRL gets built. Only that it won’t, because the libs will get in and scrap the parts that haven’t started yet.
CMFEU and Labour will ensure this is done early, under budget and completely legally with zero thuggery.
Yay! Can’t wait til this is completed…. 8 years late and $10 billion over budget! Yayyyy!!
Finally my grandchildren will be able to choose between taking a flying car or the train to get to the airport
as someone who now lives in Brisbane, I’m devastated to have this one small advantage over Melbourne eliminated.
delighted to be able to take the train when I visit however!
How about they fix and complete the ridiculous T4 departure gates.
That long walk, the ground floor departure and arrival with little seating and cramped space.
Worse than sheep herding.
Watch this project blow out to $10billion and also whats the point if its going via Western suburbs, whats with the scenic route, people, tourists will
want direct service not a scenic route.

I can’t wait for 2030
Coming soon – 2034.
They need to stop stuffing around and build a new international terminal in the middle of the field, and hand the international space over to domestic.
I say this as a fuckcars subscriber – nobody takes the train to the airport. Businesses pay for taxis, families going on holidays… Maybe tourists staying in the CBD and airport employees? I guess they ran the numbers and it came out ok, but I’m sceptical it was a high priority.
