1. Nevada to host Mountain West track and field championships starting tomorrow
Nevada athletics will host this week’s Mountain West track and field indoor championships starting Thursday and ending Saturday at the Reno-Tahoe Indoor Track inside the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. It will mark the first conference tournament Nevada track and field has hosted since doing so in the WAC in 2001 and 2002. Nevada last hosted a MW Championship in 2019, doing so in baseball. It also hosted the MW baseball tournament in 2015 and MW cross country championships in 2015. Northern Nevada will host 11 women’s teams and seven men’s teams in this week’s event. Admission for day one of the championships is complimentary with tickets for days two and three $15 each. Nevada’s women finished ninth at last year’s MW indoor championships. The Wolf Pack’s top medal candidates this week include Annalies Kalma, Maggie George, Meekness Dogonyaro, Kylee Parsons and Johanna Haas.
2. Ex-Lowry High star Savannah Stoker draws first Division I offer
Record-breaking Lowry High graduate Savannah Stoker earned her first Division I basketball scholarship offer, that coming from Idaho. Stoker is a sophomore at the College of Southern Idaho, a junior college in Twin Falls. A 5-foot-10 forward, Stoker is averaging 17 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game on 56.8 percent shooting for the Golden Eagle. At Lowry, Stoker led Lowry to state championships in basketball in all three of her varsity seasons (the NIAA didn’t play basketball during her freshman season due to COVID-19). In softball, Stoker set the state’s single-season (21) and career (47) home run totals. The College of Southern Idaho is 25-3 overall, 11-2 in the SWAC and ranked sixth in the nation among junior colleges.
3. Nevada women’s basketball hosts San Jose State tonight
The Nevada women’s basketball team will host San Jose State tonight at Lawlor Events Center in its penultimate home game of the regular season. The Wolf Pack (8-19, 4-13) has lost nine of its last 10 games but face a Spartans team that is tied for last in the Mountain West at 4-24 overall and 2-15 in league games. One of those MW wins came over Nevada, a 60-57 victory in January at the Provident Credit Union Event Center. The Wolf Pack will wrap up its home slate Saturday against New Mexico before ending the regular season at Utah State on March 3.
