LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The University of Kentucky is developing plans for an entertainment district near Kroger Field, with four concept designs currently under review.
Kevin Locke, UK’s associate vice president for planning, design and construction, said the district is intended to serve the university and surrounding community throughout the year.
“It’s gotta be 365 days a year otherwise this won’t work,” Locke said.
Four concepts under review
The renderings include green spaces, parking garages and new construction for future tenants. Locke said the scale of the project prompted university representatives to study entertainment areas near other universities and professional sports stadiums across the country.
“The magic of it all is taking the things that work and make this something that is unique to University of Kentucky,” Locke said.
Connecting Kroger Field to campus
Locke said Kroger Field is currently somewhat isolated from the main part of campus. Each design concept focuses on linking game-day energy with everyday campus life, including pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, space for concerts and fitness-focused amenities.
“As the university grows how does this connect Kroger Field to the main part of campus?” Locke said.
Locke said existing traditions, including tailgating, are a consideration in the planning process.
“When you talk about tailgating that’s a great tradition that we have and we want to make sure we enhance that but still retain that tradition as we move forward,” Locke said.
Next steps
The project is currently in phase two, which focuses on concept alternatives. Phase three is set to begin next month, when a committee will create a final plan and an associated cost estimate.
“There may be some new traditions that are spawned by this connection that we create here,” Locke said.
