This is good, our waters are their backyard too so they have an incentive to protect it.

Interestingly:

> It is designed to respond rapidly to military crises on behalf of Nato or the UN. Ireland is not proposing becoming a full member of the JEF. Instead, it will be a part of “JEF+”, a new concept to allow allied nations to take part in individual exercises and operations as they see fit.

Wikipedia says the Irish Navy has 4 operational ships. One might question whether the Irish waters ever were really Irish-controlled.

It’s wayyy to big for Ireland to patrol anyway.

Well, is it really letting them if they couldn’t do anything to stop them?

I thought the Royal Navy does anyway

Can we stop with this charade of neutrality. It’s just embarrassing at this point.

Ffs they need to grow a pair and defend it themselves

It’s odd – there was a recent report of (relatively!) large investment in armoured vehicles and self-propelled artillery.
Which, while interesting, doesn’t seem to fill our most immediate needs. I’m surprised we didn’t focus on maritime patrol – sea and air. New patrol vessels (or at least, staffing those we have and keeping them in action), and aircraft to protect against airborne intrusions.

Ireland is a rich country, why don’t they invest in their navy and patrol their own waters?

This embarrass me so much, Irelands place as a ‘neutral’ is advantageous on the world stage to foster diplomacy between certain sides and that’s why the Eu tolerate it but we need a Swiss model… we need to be able to defend ourselves and if shit did hit the fan at least have the capability to contribute to European defence

Hah and I’ve been called racist against the Irish government repeatedly for saying that Ireland leaches off of Britain for defence constantly whilst being a tax haven and refusing to contribute to Nato.

Ireland pay for their own defense? In this economy? No, we’re neutral guys, ignore that British destroyer over there…

I’m surprised that Ireland waited this long to take this step. The Russians have been mucking about near Ireland for over a year.
