MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A handful of bill in the Alabama 2026 legislative session explore regulation and use of AI. Some would introduce age verification for chat bots, restrict the of deep fakes and even use AI to assist with healthcare in struggling rural hospital.

In a news conference Wednesday, Representative Prince Chestnut said the restriction of AI will be a pivotal issue in the near future.

The negative effect of the huge data centers on our environment and our electrical grid. The implications to our nations workforce and the potential for misuse of bad actors or adversaries of this country.

Chestnut compared the unexplored landscape to that of social media and cell phone use. Decades after the introduction of social media we are still learning its dangers and lawmakers are still seeking restrictions and regulations. Particularly with children.

With social media and cellphone technology, social media companies are currently having to answer in court the unintended and often negative consequences that this technology is having on our society as a whole and especially and specifically on our children.

The practical and creative use of AI as a tool is not lost on lawmakers, they are simply looking to learn from the past and regulate this technology proactively instead of reactively.
