Strikes and retaliations escalate
The attack came as Israel and the United States carried out joint strikes on Iran while negotiations between Tehran and Washington were ongoing.
Israel’s Defense Ministry said Israel launched a “preemptive strike” against Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States had begun a “major operation” against Iran.
As part of the attacks, Iranian media reported strikes on the capital, Tehran, as well as the cities of Isfahan, Karaj, Qom, Tabriz, Bushehr, Kermanshah and Ilam.
Israel and Iran closed their airspace as Israel declared a state of emergency and air raid sirens sounded across the country.
Before Iran’s counterattacks, Israeli authorities issued warnings directing the public to seek shelter.
Iran’s military said it launched retaliatory attacks against Israel using dozens of ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles in response to the U.S. and Israeli strikes.
Iran also said it targeted U.S. bases in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Jordan with missile attacks. Iranian media reported that the U.S. naval base in Bahrain was hit.
