President Lee Jae Myung opened an account on short-form video-sharing social media platform TikTok.
In his first posting on Saturday, Lee presses with his finger an icon on a document pending his approval that read, “Open a TikTok account.”
The president then says “Hello TikTok, I’m Lee Jae Myung. Don’t forget to follow, like and comment. Thank you.”
On Friday, Lee previewed on his X account that “something big” was expected ahead.
The presidential office said the TikTok registration is part of efforts to expand Lee’s social media-based communication with the public.
Observers say Lee’s membership to the platform operated by the Chinese firm ByteDance could be an extension of efforts to enhance communication with people in China and improve perception of the neighboring country in South Korea.
