Their scream of panic when the fireworks started was actually heartbreaking. 😞

But the real concern was that as they flew out of the trees in panic, they just took off wildly (they aren’t known to be the most predictable of fliers at the best of times – our family calls them flying drunks).

They could have been hit by cars or caused accidents.

Luckily the drivers seemed to be taking it slow, but geez, it just seemed very poorly thought out.

  1. Those fireworks were in Sunnybank!?
I’m in Greenslopes, and I was convinced they were happening next door.

It’s Sunnybank Plaza’s Lunar New Year event, apparently. I’m assuming they had a licensed operator.

There’s a lot of cockatoo’s and other birds where I live, and there’s frequently fireworks that always send the birds into a frenzy.

    I hate it so much.

  3. It took me 45 minutes to get out of that hellhole carpark this afternoon. And I left before the fireworks even began.

I must have missed the birds interfering with traffic. Could you point it out to me?
I’m pretty sure those same birds fly into those trees every night at about the same time.

Some of the comments in here disgust me. How do people seriously not care about our wildlife? Where’s the compassion?

This issue may seem minor because it’s not affecting you, but it’s still affecting a living creature whose quality of life and safety is being impacted. All so a bunch of people can enjoy some loud colourful explosions.

I wish humans were more thoughtful and intelligent as a whole. It’s sad.

Mate of mine was driving down the highway in a truck with his window down one time and one of them flew into the cab.

He said it was pretty chaotic trip for the two of them until he managed to get it back out.

  7. Same thing every year since forever.. There used to be way more lorikeets there a few decades back. You couldn’t hear yourself think come dusk. They would blacken out the sky there were so many lol. It’s a shame they freak out but unfortunately I don’t think you’ll ever stop Chinese new year celebrations in Sunnybank.

  8. If you report the issue they’ll probably end up removing the trees 😂

Not much you can do about it. I’m sure there’s more drastic disturbance issues for our normal new years celebrations.
