Heading into Race 7, the final fleet race of the 2026 SailGP Sydney event, Spain’s Los Gallos led the standings on 48 points. The United States sat second on 40, with Australia close behind on 38. Emirates GBR were fourth on 37, followed by Red Bull Italy on 33 and Artemis on 31. The margins were tight and Sydney Harbour had provided little breeze all afternoon.

Race 7 was the decider for final race points and who would go forth to the finals. Los Gallos was guaranteed a place in the final. Second and third places were not settled.

Race 7 delivered a decisive shift that reshaped the order.

In modest pressure that had built from the end of the previous race, the fleet launched cleanly, but within minutes the breeze rotated left. Boats positioned for a straight lane suddenly sailed extra distance. Those already angled correctly gained immediate leverage.

ROCKWOOL Racing reacted first. Nicolai Sehested’s crew stayed in phase and avoided unnecessary manoeuvres, sailing directly at the mark while others lost valuable metres. Denmark rounded clear and after that never looked threatened.

Red Bull Italy read the shift well and secured second. NorthStar Canada found last minute rhythm and finished third. Mubadala Brazil placed fourth in a steady performance.

Behind them, the battle for final qualification defined the race. Australia were forced into an additional manoeuvre at the first mark and struggled to recover, eventually finishing tenth. Emirates GBR sailed conservatively to fifth, while the United States crossed in sixth, managing their points carefully.

Spain, carrying a buffer from earlier wins, finished eighth. Germany placed seventh, Switzerland ninth and Artemis eleventh.

Race 7 points awarded Denmark 10, Italy 9 and Canada 8, with Great Britain collecting 6 and the United States 5.

Across seven fleet races, where breeze was at a premium, consistency proved decisive. Spain advance on the strength of early dominance. Great Britain qualify through measured sailing across the weekend. The United States secured their place by managing risk when it mattered most.

Australia missed the final at home after one costly moment in shifting breeze. This is the first season they have failed to get into the Sydney event finals since the start of SailGP.

One race to go until the end of the 2026 SailGP Sydney event. Who will be crowned the winner?
