The global tourism map is being redrawn as Armenia is presented in Uruguay as a new and appealing destination for international visitors. The Armenian Embassy in Uruguay facilitated this strategic introduction, which represents a strengthening of bilateral cultural and economic ties. It has been observed that South American tourists’ traditional travel preferences are shifting towards high-value cultural experiences, and Armenia has emerged as a leading contender to meet this demand.
As part of this initiative, Hiperviajes, one of Uruguay’s leading travel agencies, has officially announced the addition of Armenia to its premium portfolio. The country is being promoted not only as a stopover but also as a “must-see” destination. This development is expected to bridge the geographical gap between the Southern Cone and the Caucasus, providing Uruguayans with access to an ancient civilisation that has survived remarkably well in the modern era.
Diplomatic Advocacy and Strategic Growth
The formal presentation of the country’s potential was conducted during a specialized event titled “Armenia: A Must-Visit Destination”, hosted at the national embassy. During the proceedings, the significant progress recorded in the domestic tourism sector was addressed by Armenia’s Ambassador to Uruguay, Mariam Gevorgyan. A comprehensive overview was provided regarding the strategic programmes and reforms currently being implemented by the Armenian government to modernize infrastructure and enhance the visitor experience.
It was emphasized by the Ambassador that the growing interest among international tourists is a direct result of the country’s unique combination of historical assets and a high standard of safety. Statistical indicators from recent years were presented to demonstrate a consistent upward trajectory in visitor arrivals. According to the Statistical Committee of the Republic of Armenia, the nation welcomed over 2.26 million foreign tourists in 2025 alone, representing a steady growth that highlights the effectiveness of the Strategic Tourism Development Program 2026–2030. This government-led initiative is designed to transform the nation’s potential into a globally competitive industry focusing on sustainability and high-quality service.
Professional Insights and Tailored Itineraries
The logistical feasibility of these journeys was further elaborated upon by the leadership of Hiperviajes. Speeches were delivered by Chief Executive Officer Fernando Rivas, Corporate Manager Andrea Bejollio, and Sales Manager Eugenia Calvette, who collectively outlined the diverse opportunities available for visiting the Armenian highlands. A variety of travel routes and specialized tourism packages were proposed, designed to be accessible throughout the year, ensuring that the seasonal beauty of the Armenian landscape—from the blooming springs of the Ararat valley to the snow-capped winters of Tsaghkadzor—can be fully appreciated.
The expertise of the travel agency was utilized to highlight how the existing infrastructure now supports seamless travel between major historical sites and the vibrant, modern capital of Yerevan. It was noted that the packages would cater to various niches, including luxury cultural tours, adventure expeditions in the Lori and Syunik regions, and “MICE” (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism.

A Tapestry of Culture and Heritage
Armenia’s appeal is deeply rooted in its status as a living museum. The country’s rich cultural heritage and natural attractions were showcased as the primary drivers of its international allure. Particular attention was paid to the three UNESCO World Heritage sites that serve as the crown jewels of Armenian architecture:
- The Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin: Masterpieces of mediaeval ecclesiastical architecture.
- The Cathedral and Churches of Echmiatsin and the Archaeological Site of Zvartnots: Representing the dawn of Christian architecture in the 4th century.
- The Monastery of Geghard and the Upper Azat Valley: A stunning complex partially carved into the mountainside.
Beyond the stones of its ancient monasteries, the “living heritage” of the country was also highlighted. The event was concluded with a reception where guests were treated to authentic Armenian cuisine, a move that successfully demonstrated the gastronomic appeal of the nation. The inclusion of traditional elements such as lavash (flatbread) and regional wines served as a sensory invitation to the attendees, reinforcing the idea that Armenian hospitality is an immersive experience.
Collaborative Efforts and High-Level Attendance
The high profile of the attendees added to the significance of this promotional event. Uruguay’s Ministry of Tourism and the Association of Travel Agencies were represented, as well as more than two dozen sector-specific companies. The presence of media outlets ensured that the message about Armenia’s “promising” status reached a larger domestic audience. Senator and former Minister of Tourism Liliam Kechichian also attended the event, lending institutional validation to the proceedings.
The collaboration between the Armenian diplomatic mission and the Uruguayan private sector is seen as a model for future tourism expansion. By combining government reforms with the marketing power of established agencies such as Hiperviajes, Armenia is successfully carving out a niche in the competitive South American market. The message was clear: the country is prepared, safe, and waiting to be discovered.
