Storm clouds are set to build rapidly across parts of Spain in the coming hours, with eastern and southern regions most likely to see the heaviest impact. Forecasters are warning of heavy downpours, strong winds and unsettled conditions in several provinces as a new weather system crosses the country.

According to Spanish meteorological forecasts, an upper trough moving across the peninsula will trigger storm development, bringing bursts of intense rain and gusty winds, particularly in eastern and southern areas.

Sudden shift as unstable air moves in

The change is being driven by a pool of colder air moving at altitude, which creates instability when it meets warmer surface temperatures. This type of setup often leads to fast-forming storm clouds and short but intense rainfall episodes.

Forecasters warn that some areas could see rainfall totals exceeding 20 litres per square metre in a short period, enough to cause localised flooding in urban zones or areas with poor drainage. While the system is not expected to bring widespread severe weather nationwide, it could still create disruption in the provinces most exposed to storm activity.

Strong winds and muddy rain possible in the south

Alongside heavy showers, strong wind gusts are also likely as the system passes through. In southern regions, the weather pattern could combine with airborne dust, raising the possibility of muddy rain, a familiar phenomenon during unstable spring conditions. This type of weather can reduce visibility on roads and leave vehicles coated in a thin layer of reddish residue, especially in coastal and Mediterranean areas.

Spring weather can change quickly

Although Spain is moving towards brighter and warmer days, episodes like this highlight how quickly conditions can shift during early spring. Calm mornings can give way to thunderstorms within hours when unstable air masses are present.

The storm risk appears limited to select provinces rather than a nationwide event. However, as always during unsettled spells, local intensity can vary sharply, meaning some areas may experience little more than passing showers while others see intense bursts of rain and wind.
