Just saw this in the news. Is this something that is likely to pass? Does it have support by any major party? It sounds like Government overreach to me and forced introduction of American and British food taboos, especially in a country like Italy where horse meat is such a strong part of regional food culture, I am Swedish and I myself enjoyed lots of horse meat in Cagliari and Alghero. It also sounds like it would be a massive violation of the free movement of food products in the EU.

I like horse meat too, even if I eat it occasionally.
As for the bill, it has a long way before it reaches the final voting stage, so there is no need to worry right now. About the odds of passing, IMO it’s somewhat unlikely because many (small) local cities often have events featuring horse meat. It would force them to shut them down.
Michela Brambilla is the Italian one-woman version of PETA.
She just comes up with some BS idea to keep the focus on her (and on her activities), but there’s just no way the Government is going to even entertain the idea of proposing such a law.
Much less a right-wing one that has been using Italian food as a strong propaganda point (it being recognized as UNESCO Cultural Heritage of Humanity) and that, of course, can’t afford to alienate the votes of the whole meat industry.

Does it look likely to you that a far right government would do this? Acting like people who care about the poor little horse or whatever, going against big, lobbying industries, alienate their audience who is all about the exact opposite of this?

It’s deeply hypocritical. Why horses specifically? “They’re cute” isn’t a valid reason. I hope it doesn’t pass.

I don’t know but I hope not. It was proposed by members of two opposition parties and of a miniscule one that is in government alongside the main three.
I think the government won’t pass it out of fear of losing votes, as keeping the status quo is often tge best compromise to displease the least people possible
