We’ve long since passed the point where the list of who IS participating is shorter than the list of those who aren’t. Can we all just admit this is an exercise in pointlessness and stop the bans?

  2. lol.. not even the police in the nation’s capital are participating. Amazing.

  3. Spider-King-270 on

Oooof can’t even get it running in the capital. It’s long past due to just scrap this program and let owners use their property again.

How much longer are the feds going to commit to this?

When in our history has the conservatives, NDP (all leadership candidates and various provincial governments and parties), the only liberal controlled province, as well as pretty much every other province and territory, almost every police force in the country, local municipalities, government contractors, crown corporations, etc, opposed or refused to participate in a federal program?

My guess the money is sufficient and might already have been spent. There’s good reasons for gun owners to be skeptical of receiving compensation (other than the government making it clear funds are limited and not guaranteed) when it seems like no one else is willing to jump at the chance to get some of this funding.

  5. I honestly thought this was a Beaverton headline about the federal government not participating in the program.

  6. Can we just let this die and stop seeing every single police department one at a time say they won’t help with a thing no one is doing?

It’s some weird political legacy thing that Carney inherited and didn’t kill and doesn’t solve the illegal guns being smuggled from the US problem that we actually care about.

Part of me really wants to believe they’re only pushing this so they can watch it fail and say “Oh well, we tried” and put it to bed, but the reasonable part knows better.

I am glad to see so much push back against obvious bad policy though, it’s refreshing.

  8. That’s fucking embarrassing. The police for the capital where our government sits do not want to be part of this.

That shows you how bad it is.

The cost of the gun buyback program keeps getting cheaper and cheaper.

  10. So can anyone tell me what happens if we miss the deadline? The RCMP made a point in their latest email to say that just because the local police force may not be participating, that doesn’t mean you’re not out of compliance.

  11. Not surprised whatsoever. The entire program is garbage but the LPC is too full of pride to admit it’s a terrible program.

  12. explosive_fascinator on

The Liberals are going to spend all the money for this program, call it a success despite all the evidence, and then stop talking about it.  Eventually another gov will reverse the OICs.  Just a total waste.

  13. toilet_for_shrek on

This program continues to be a stupid idea, and the Montreal voters whom this buyback is trying to appease are also stupid if they actually believe this is going to have any sort of impact on Canadian gun crime

Reddit is the only place I’ve seen disdain for this program. You guys own guns?

  15. Projerryrigger on

It hasn’t even started and it’s already looking worse than the Long Gun Registry that was initially projected to have a net annual cost in the 7 figure range before being scrapped after roughly $2 billion spent. On top of having no observable impact reducing or solving violent gun crime.

Anyone with some basic knowledge paying attention should have known this was a mess to start that just kept going downhill.

  16. of course not. they didn’t even participate in getting the damn trucker convoy out of their city

  17. Can we just use our legally obtained property as vetted and trained individuals, in a safe and proper manner as we always have?

    I’m tired, boss.

  18. HotIntroduction8049 on

I honestly wonder what the Liberal play is here? Just let it die a silent death? Carney is a smart fellow and not one to give in to special interests…..so far.

  19. rastamasta45 on

So when will the mythical “mobile collection units” be activated? Are they even vetted?

  20. littlepenisbigheart1 on

You remember the anti vax Ottawa cop that was suspended during Covid for refusing the vaccine…you know, the one that kept the truckers convoy in the loop about where and when the Ottawa cops would show up? Apparently he was never removed from sensitive information being shared within the system.
No, me to…totally forgot about that.

  21. “Preventing and reducing violent crime continues to be an ongoing strategic and operational priority, and this includes a focus on gang activity and seizing illegal firearms in our 2024-2027 Strategic Plan.”

  22. FingalForever on

In summary, police are wholly supportive of gun control but not the administrative intensive method required under the current law. time to double down on gun control but take into account what it means for police.

  23. Poffertjes_lover on

I wish I was the owner of that stock image they have used on the cover of every article about gun control for the last 5-6 years. I would be a wealthy man

  24. Ok-Bowler-203 on

Good. Best thing they can do is just roll back everything JT put in place. All these bans and crime is still poop.

  25. FunkyFrunkle on

Just fucking scrap it already Jesus Christ what the fuck are we doing here?

  26. But but I’ve been gaslight by the Liberals and the federal government via ads on YouTube that this is already happening. ..
