CITYWIDE — THE CONSULATE GENERAL OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA IN NEW YORK will mark Lithuania’s Independence Restoration Day with a Lithuanian and U.S. flag-raising ceremony this Saturday at Bowling Green Park.

The event commemorates the 36th anniversary of the restoration of Lithuania’s independence and the 100th anniversary of the consulate’s founding. Lithuanians worldwide observe the Day of the Restoration of Independence on March 11. On that date in 1990, Lithuania officially declared the reestablishment of its independence as a sovereign state.

Remarks are expected from Lithuanian community leaders, New York City officials and the consul general. Musical performances will be offered by the New York Lithuanian Mixed Choir and the New York Maironis School Youth Choir, conducted by Laura Vidžiūnaitė and Gediminas Keras. Both choirs rehearse weekly in Williamsburg at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, a longtime hub of Brooklyn’s Lithuanian community.

The March 7 ceremony will take place at noon near the iconic Charging Bull sculpture. Organizers are encouraging attendees to wear Lithuanian colors in celebration of the Baltic nation’s independence.
