The World Youth and Junior Biathlon Championships are in full swing in Germany, where Estere Volfa won her second gold medal, triumphing in the 7.5km sprint. Despite one shooting error, she left no hope for her competitors with her speed on the track, beating her closest competitor by almost a minute.
Volfa started the first kilometer of the course slowly, coming in 7th place at the 1.1km mark, but by the first firing line she had already moved into the top three overall. In the prone shooting, she made one mistake that forced her to cover an additional 150m in the penalty circle, returning to the course in fifth place.
The Latvian hit five out of five targets in the standing shooting, which gave her a significant leadbefore the decisive drive to the finish.
In addition to the junior world champion, three other Latvian athletes participated in this discipline, all of whom earned three penalty laps. The best performer in this competition was Elza Bleidele, who claimed 15th place, losing two minutes and 28.3 seconds to her teammate at the finish. Jelizaveta Boronenko finished in 65th place, and Alise Plāte in 82nd place. A total of 86 athletes finished.
The championships are still ongoing but already this has been a very productive competition for Latvians – first of all, in the first competition, Rihards Lozbers triumphed in the 12.5km individual distance in the junior classification, then two days later, the Latvian mixed relay team with Matīss Meirāns, Lozbers, Volfa and Bleidele in the line-up overtook the biathlon powerhouse Norway in a fierce battle and won gold. Later, even with three shooting errors in the 7.5km sprint in the youth competition, Lozbers managed to win a silver medal, and now Volfa has added another gold.
