In Latvia, the incidence of influenza continues to exceed the epidemic threshold, but has decreased slightly over the past week, according to the latest information from the Disease Prevention and Control Centre (SPKC).

Last week, the National Microbiology Reference Laboratory confirmed influenza in 12.4% of the samples tested (15.2% in the previous week), with all laboratory-confirmed cases being type A influenza viruses.

Given the simultaneous circulation of influenza, Covid-19, and other respiratory infections, the SPKC urges residents to follow preventive measures – wash your hands regularly, ventilate rooms, avoid crowded places, and use medical face masks or respirators if necessary. If you become ill, stay at home, contact your family doctor, and follow the doctor’s instructions to reduce the spread of infection.

In outpatient care facilities included in the monitoring, the incidence of influenza decreased by 24% in the previous week, with 190.4 clinically confirmed cases of influenza per 100,000 inhabitants (compared to 250.6 per 100,000 inhabitants in the previous week).

Cases of influenza were registered in eight of the ten areas included in the monitoring. The highest intensity of influenza was registered in Jelgava (456.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). As in previous seasons, the highest incidence of influenza was recorded among children under 14 years of age.

Last week, the incidence of influenza decreased in all age groups.

Last week, eight reports of deaths in patients with confirmed influenza infection were received, four of which were registered in week 9 and four more deaths were added to the statistics for week 8 (a total of 10 deaths in week 8). Since the beginning of the season, a total of 36 reports of deaths in patients with confirmed influenza infection have been received.
