  1. Yea I went through that data a while back and found that under Trump ICE basically stopped functioning as it should have.

    Interesting seeing the spike from FY21 through FY24 and then the drop in FY25. I’d be curious to see this normalized against total encounters or crossings, because raw counts alone can shift a lot depending on enforcement levels and traffic volume.

    The chart might be more flat if were a percentage of arrests relative to the number of encounters or illegal entries….

    Their job isn’t to catch criminals. It’s to prevent people from illegally crossing the border. Also everyone who crosses the border between ports of entry commits a Federal offense. It just usually isn’t charged because the courts can’t handle all the cases. That’s the whole reason for the civil immigration court system.

    Without looking deeply at the data, it would make sense for attempted border crossings to decrease if people know they’re more likely to get deported or otherwise not have a great time once they’re in.
