Romania will not deploy nuclear components on its territory in the medium term. This was announced by the President of the country Nikushor Dan commenting on France’s plans to expand its nuclear deterrence and cooperation with European partners, the agency quoted Reuters.
“As a NATO state, Romania is under the NATO nuclear umbrella provided by the United States,” Dan said.
He added that protection under the NATO umbrella does not mean the deployment of nuclear elements on the territory of Romania, and in the medium term, the deployment of nuclear components is impossible.
Earlier this week, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Paris will expand the its nuclear arsenal and potentially allow European partners to deploy French military aircraft on their territory for nuclear deterrence missions.
According to him, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, and Denmark have expressed their readiness to participate in this initiative.
Although France and Britain are nuclear powers, most European countries relied mainly on the United States to deter any potential adversaries.
Macron’s initiative comes amid criticism from the US administration Donald Trump on Europe’s readiness and ability to defend itself, and amid concerns about growing global geopolitical instability as the United States and Israel strike Iran.

- In January 2026, it became known that Sweden negotiate with France and Britain on the nuclear umbrella.
- According to Bloomberg, Europe secretly cooks its own nuclear deterrent without the United States.
- The deployment of nuclear weapons on their territory has been repeatedly advocated by Estonia and Poland.
