New for It Wallet: all public administration documents must be available from February 2027

In one year, Italians’ digital wallet will be revolutionized. Not just the driving license and the health card, already present from the end of 2024. But also all the others in the public administration, including the new digital voter card.

The It-Wallet system sets the stages to reach full realization. It does this through a Prime Ministerial Decree, carried forward by the digital innovation department of the Prime Minister’s Office together with the ministries of Economy and Public Administration, which was signed on 18 February. The objective is highlighted at the beginning: «Implement the provisions of article 64-quater, paragraph 5, of the Cad», i.e. the Digital Administration Code.

The text gives a precise deadline to the PA offices: within one year, everyone will have to comply. Translated: the documents must also be made available in virtual format for citizens. Private entities will also be able to join in this period of time.

At the moment, however, the It-Wallet is a “guest” of the IO platform. The Prime Ministerial Decree aims to transform the digital wallet project into a state infrastructure. And it does so by clarifying the roles. The first is that of the State Mint Printing Institute (Ipzs): «It provides for the design, creation, implementation and management of the organizational and technological infrastructure necessary for the implementation» of the system.
